  1. I read this review at

    http://www6.tomshardware.com/storage/20031027/dvd_burner-41.html

Our recommendation goes to two drives: the LG GSA-4040B and the Pioneer DVR-A06. LG doesn't suffer from any big defects, except for the fact that some DVD players can't read its +Rs, and offers unparalleled features, outstanding flexibility, including DVD-RAM support, good performance, solid support and the lowest price around. Pioneer doesn't quite pass the DVD check, either, but it offers regular firmware updates and good performance in all disciplines.
Would like to know if this is just a firmware problem and if you update the firmware will it fix the problem.

I'm thinking of buying "LG GSA-4040B" or "Pioneer DVD-A06"

  2. Sometimes it's not easy to figure out whom to trust, here's a link for OC-Freak's review on the same burner and something more:

    http://forum.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?s=3402a839715a92784a498a4d08dc84de&threadid=78988

In this case, I'd trust OC-Freak's review more than Tom's Hardware's.

Dont believe everything you see or read!

I personnally have this LG 4040b and found it excellent, how you had so much trouble with it baffles me. ( OC Freaks I refer to)
Using the 301 firmware all my burns with various brands are at 4x and have experienced no coasters using DVD Shrink and Nero 5.5.10.54., everything I have backed up works perfectly in my $AU99 Coles Supermarket! German designed model AFK Chinese made DVD Player!.

This is a DVD burner, the fact it also burns CD's is a bonus, I personally still use a LiteON burner for burning 90 minute CD's as they are so cheap now, they are difficult to even to give away.

Tom's Hardware is a very respected site and possesses more kudos than you are apparently aware of.

There's nothing wrong with the plus performance of those dual burners' (LG, Pioneer, Sony,....)

Those four players (the Cyberhome 402, Redstar 231g, Toshiba SD-210E, Yamakawa AVPhile 715) just refuse to play DVDs written as DVD+R.

The ones that burn ROM booktype by default all succeded. (Nu, Philips, HP300i)

Unfortunately dual format burners are not capable of bitsetting and those players probably won't have a firmware update so they could accept different booktype than DVD-ROM, DVD-R and DVD-RW
You stop me again whilst I'm walking and I'll cut your fv<king Jacob's off.

  5. I use Pioneer DVR-105 DVD Writer with NERO (5.5.9.14 Pioneer) in my OFFICE. Can I use this SW with Pioneer DVR-106. What do you think TOSHIBA DVD Writer (SDR51122BS). Is there any advice?

    Thanks

I have a GSA-4040B and I have burned more than 50 +R discs and i haven't had one coaster or one that would not play in my stand alone players or in any of my friends'.

I have used both the A300 firmware and the A301 throughout all of these burns, and I have used Nero 6 on all.

  7. "tompika" So thats why the LG fail in some DVD+R burning where HP and PHILIPS did better. When you have a burner that only DVD+R the firmware is better. But when you have a duel burner you can not update the firmware as much for DVD+R but firmware update take better benefit DVD-R.
