  1. OK I am encoding XVCD's from DivX/Avi using the guide on this site.

I have read that MPEG 1 doesn't support interlacing while MPEG2 does.

I am encoding the XVCD stream as "MPEG-1 Viseo CD (non-standard)" in TMPGEnc.

Does this mean that I have to de-interlace the avi before hand?

If so do I de-interlace using VirtualDub (before or after extracting a WAV file ?) or can I mearly use the De-interlace filter within TMPGEnc?

If I use TMPGEnc's de-interlace filter what settings should I use?

Thanks to anyone who can help.

I think this might be why my CD-Rs are distorting or loosing sound sync 60% through playing on my DVD player.

Actually, IMHO, its more likley that your XVCD's are at too high a bitrate for your DVD player to read reliably. Try lowering it a bit.

98% of your AVI's are de-interlaced (DivX and XviD are this way). Interlaced AVI's are a DivX 5.1 only thing, and nasty to watch on a computer.

I have excellant results with KVCD/XVCD.

MPEG1 VBR. 1800 Max, 500 min, Average to size (typically 1200'ish). No PCM for Audio, I use MP2. Quality is very VHS. As a side note, these make excellant kid disks for Disney movies (usually under 90 minutes).

I have also played with VCD resolution in an MPEG2 stream. Actually it's 320x240 SVCD, same bitrates. Quality is very good, but it's a major compatability issue on some players. You can get 100+ minutes per CDR with aduequate quality.

  4. Thanks for the replies guys.

I use CQ (constant quality) set at 100 with the max bitrate set at 2200 and the min bitrate set at 500. I'll try lower if this latest encoding doesn't work. Would changing the VBV buffer rate from 40 help?

The video source is set as non-interlace.

So is TMPGenc encoding a progressive or interlaced mpeg?

If the resultant file is progressive do I need to set the frame rate in the "Video" tag to 50 instead of 25?

Or if the file is interlace will it work properly as a non-standard MPEG1? Bearing in mind that MPEG1 doesnt' support interlace.

    Thanks again guys

    progressive.

    No, leave at 25.

  6. Thanks Bugster.

Got any more info about VBV buffer settings please?

Or does that depend on my DVD player?

The ones in the TmpGenc templates are correct, do not alter them.

  8. Point taken. I'll leave it at 40.

    Thanks again.
