    Hi.

Is there any utility which is able to determine the PI SUM 8, PIF and POF of a burned DVD? I have some DVD-Rs, which are supposed to be bad (according to magazines), however I never had problems with them. I would like to confirm the quality with numbers (a utility, giving out the PI SUM 8, PIF and POF).

    TIA

No, I'm talking about a tool which permts to verify the quality of the burned DVDs. There is a tool called "kprobe", but this is only for one brand of DVD recorders. I have a NEC and would like to use such a tool to verify the quality of recorded DVDs.

    TIA

  12. Have you tried Kprobe, I've seen another brand burner with DVD out from it on C1 C2 errors.

I didn't try KProbe since no download links provides the program. Do you have a working link?

Kprobe works with LiteON DVD-ROMS not burners FYI. If the tools link isn't a valid link I'd suggest a google search.

  15. Kprobe is very hard to find these days. It only works with Liteon drives. I've only heard of one other utility that does anything close, and it's a Plextor specific utility. I heard it may not be as comprehensive as Kprobe, but I've never seen it or used it.

The C1/C2 error graphs you get from Kprobe are a great way to compare different media burned on your own burner. I usually run everything I burn through Kprobe to check the disk is readable and get a feel for how my current burns compare to known good burns of Riteks.

It's a shame there are not more utilities like this available. However if you do a search around this forum, you'll see it's probably too technical for many, who are only interested in wether or not the disk plays in their standalone.

A disk could be just good enough to play on your player without skips, but may not play at all on different player. Kprobe can help reveal this.

It's true that Kprobe only runs on Liteon drives, however Liteon DVD-ROMs are very cheap these days. If testing is important to you it might be worth $35 or so for a LTD-166S. These won't give as reliable a result as a Liteon DVD burner would but they are okay for comparative testing, I guess (i.e. how does media brand A compare to brand B on my particular burner). It's kind of tough to make any generalizations from Kprobe results because they really only apply to the one drive that you're running the Kprobe tests on.

As for where to get Kprobe, check over on the DVD media forums at CDFreaks (http://club.cdfreaks.com). I believe there's a link to the latest Kprobe there (I just downloaded it about a week ago).
