I have just got a new dv camcorder and have my first hour of footage on tape , i have converted to avi and then to mpeg2 all well and good so far !!
Now after watching it i need to take sections out the boring parts basically ! now i know how to trim the start and the end of it but im at a loss how to take sections out of the middle ??
Any help with this please would be much appreciated

you can use tmpgenc to cut and join mpeg2-footage even in the middle ... or you are using a videoeditor like ulead mediastudiopro or adobe premiere for cutting your captured avi-footage.

If you want to maintain quality as much as possible then you should edit the avi (I assume you are transferring DV AVI dircet to your PC via firewire. Your 1 hour video should be approx 13Gigs in size).
You can use virtualdub for simple cuts and its free but you will need to install a DV codec. The panasonic DV codec works for this.
