WMV to AVI or more common formats

Hello!
I'm new and I post because i need help.
I want to convert some videos i have from thet damned WMV format to AVi or MPEG.
I followed some insrtuctions i found around in internet, but toose don't work with me.

1) I downloaded virtualdub v.1.3c but when i rename my file to asf and i open it, it says to me " Couldn't locate decompressor for format WMV1 (unknown)

2) I tried to rename my files to asf and convert them with TMPEGnc but that doesn't work.

3) I downladed Graphedit and i followed the prodedure.
Open the video, cancel the last two filters of audio and video, insert avi mux and file writer.
But thet work bad because after thet i have an avi video with the video thet runs faster then the music. So the music is cut by the end.

Can you give me some hints? How can i do ?
