  1. Hello.....

OK, so, as promised I'm back with another "state the obvious" question....

I'm using a 1ghz imac flatpanel & the Canopus ADVC 100 converter....as soon as I figured out the cabling, the thing worked like a charm! Seriously,....I wasn't sure what I was doing but after 1 click, the video was importing with nice quality. ( coooool new toy! )

BUT It has no audio. I guess I could have expected that, since I only had Svideo connected importing from a hi8 camera. Oddly enough, I had an Audio/Video cable in it's packaging just laying around in a drawer. I hooked it up to the camera, and then to the audio in of the converter box.....and imported, but still no sound.

Now, I'm wondering if I need to change the DIP switches...as factory default, they are all set to off...which means I'm set to "locked audio mode" t 48kHz/16-bit. ( Not that I know what that means. )

So, I unlocked the audio DIP switch and tried again...but this time, not even video imprted even though imovie said the camera was connected.

    Any tips?
    Thanks in advance...

I will tell you my setup, hopefully it can shed some light on your situation.

4 head RCA HQ VCR using RCA gold tip cables, one singluar for video out,
one pair (red and white ends) out the audio on back of VCR to the
FRONT of the ADVC100 inputs, FW cable out FRONT of advc100 to
onboard FW port on back of G4.

All DIP switches left alone (factory) setting.
Select Analog setting by pushing select button once to switch.

Push in VHS tape, make sure channel is set to 3.
    Push play.

Launch iMovie 3.01 ( iLife version). Select Camera input.
Video comes into left large window, can hear sound,
click import, video starts coming in, audio starts coming in.

Stop VCR. Stop Camera import. Drag clips ( four)from shelf to
organizer. click and view in timeline. hit space bar, audio and video playback.

  3. hmm...I see what you are saying with the audio cables, but I'm still stuck.

The first camera I'm using to import video with is a Sony Hi8 camera, and the only connections on it I see are S video, AV, and RFU DC OUT.

Now, as I said...I'm new to this, but Audio won't import through S video will it?

A/V means audio/video, right? Well, using the adapter that came with the Canopus...I pluged one end of the AV cable into the camera, and the other end into the jack...which turns AV into S video. And that was plugged into S video in, on the back of the unit. Still, no audio.

I also made sure that the Canopus is set to import Analog video, though when used as DV it didn't do anything also.

I know this has to be simple, but I'm just not seeing it...

I'm not totally clear on what you are doing with the a/v cable into the advc100 but I think you have it wrong.

a/v is audio/video. The white/red are leftaudio/rightaudio and the yellow is the video. Svideo is only video. You are using that so don't need the yellow a/v cable.

I have the svideo and the white/red audio cables plugged into the front and it is working fine. Double check all the dip switch settings also. Mine came with a ntsc switch set for the Japan setting rather than US ntsc setting. So depending on where you are and what you are doing you can't trust the default dipswitch settings.

  5. I think I must have something wrong, but thank you for explaining all that.

    To help clarify:

S video from the analog camera to the Canopus works just fine, but no audio. ( which S video can't handle anyways. )

This Hi8 camera, unfortunately, has no audio jacks. Only an AV jack.
So, I guess to get in audio and video I need to use the AV cable, right?

Well, the canopus came with a adapter that turns AV into S video.

Oddly enough, you're suppossed to put that into video in in the back of the unit...the front won't fit in. ( I tried, but I didn't want to break anything by forcing it in! )

And the canopus was set to "analog in". But with this av cable, i can't even get in video....

*sigh* Thanks for your help...I need it! This wedding video has to get done, and I'm already late.

    Ditch the S-Video component altogether.

    Take the Hi-8 camera,
using the A/V port and the a/v cable:

    Plug up the a/v cable
match red cable end to red (right audio)
white cable end to white ( left audio)
yellow cable end to yellow (video)
    to the Canopus

make sure import on canopus to analog
    check DIp switches for NTSC
    launch imovie
    click import

    what do you get now....?
