I've burned many dvds with my 500A, and they always seem fine. When I've done them for a friend of mine, she always has video problems when she tries them on various machines. She was at a friends house, where one of the discs wasn't working, so they burned a copy with the drive on their computer (I don't know which brand of drive or media yet). The copy worked fine in their dvd player.

Could this be my drive, or the media? I've had the drive for almost a year.

    Thanks in advance

Media may definitely be an issue. However, I found that after I flashed my DRU-500a to firmware 2.0f (from 1.0f and before that from 1.0c) that this greatly improved the compatibility of the burned discs. My Accu's went from 2x to 1x burn speed but the resultant discs were much more compatible though. Also, I'm able to burn TDK DVD-R 2x discs at 4x. A full disc in 15-minutes. These play very well in my standalone DVD player, a Toshiba SD-2800. Anyway, firmware may also be an issue.

Is there a way for me to check my current firmware? I know I flashed it after I bought the drive.

  4. Also update your burning software, Old version of nero had problem's. I now use copytodvd. I burn with pioneer AO4. But I do have old DVD that I made that do not work on some friend's DVD player's and when I update my software it now work's. Kind of suck when I went over to my friend's house that has a 47inch HDTV and my DVD's would not play. LOL

I used DVDInfo Pro. It's free and it's listed in the tools section to the left. In addition to firmware, this program will also provide you info on your media.
