    Do you mean:

    1) how do I cut the sides off to make it 4:3

    or

    2) how do I add black bars to the top and bottom to keep the 16:9 aspect ratio but make it a 4:3 for a regualr TV to display

  3. I mean how to take the bars off the top and bottom and make the movie so it fits a regular tv screen. In otherwords you always read the message on a fullscreen before it starts that states this movie has been formatted to fit your screen, thats what I want. I can't stand widescreen, if they had to chop the sides off to get the fullscreen that way, then yes thats what I want to know. How does one cut the sides off and what is the best software for it and how is it done.
    Thank You

I hate to butt into such a charming exchange....

When video is formated to fit full screen they use a technique called Pan n' Scan. They cut off the sides of the video but they also move the frame around so that the important objects (people talking etc.) aren't cut out of the frame. This isn't possible using basic tools at home. Pan'n Scan is regarded as butchery by videophiles (see above) and a home conversion from wide screen to full screen would be worse.

  7. i admitt hating widescreen at the start of my video journey but as time went on i found it is vastly better viewing experience....i only use 4:3 with tv captures ...everything else 16:9...don't bag him/her out they will release the true nature of 16:9 latter
How long could we maintain? I wondered. How long until one of us starts raving and jabbering at this boy? What will he think then?

to actually convert a widescreen to full screen load the movie file into tmpgenc and goto settings/advanced/clip frame/arrange settings and adjust so you stretch the screen to fit and then widen to get the proper aspect ratio and then encode and burn and cry cause it looks butchered.
