    Is capturing files off tv be considered as "ripping"? Or is that term used only for DVD to DVD, VCD, SVCD, etc.?

    usually ripping means taking the stuff off the dvd on to your pc... not to do with capturing

    Ripping can mean decrypting an encrypted DVD and putting the files onto your HD for backing up. It's also used when referring to extracting music tracks from a store bought CD and converting them to mp3 format.
