best method for newbie

hello guys. i have dvds that were ripped with dvd decypher on my hardrive ages ago. i have now purchased a dvd burner. my question is , what is the best way to convert these back to dvd using a dvd-r disks so that i can watch on a standalone dvd player. thanks

Loads of answers I would check the guides on the left. You could use dvd shrink or dvdone.

1. DVD2AVI to create a DVD2AVI project and extract the AC3.

2. AVISYNTH to set up frame serving.

3. Main Concept, CCE, TMPGEnc (or others) to re-compress the video track. Look into https://www.videohelp.com/calc for help with bitrates.

4. Repeat for other movies...

5. DVD-LAB, Ulead (or others) to author DVD and create DVD files.

6. Nero (or others) to burn disk.

You'll find much help through the guides and forums here (IMO dvdrhelp is about the best place to start) - other sources for help are places like Doom9 (try some google searches). The tools section will give links for all the programs I've mentioned.

I'd recommend you start with RW's - you're going to have a few coasters...

Follow hardcoreruss's recomendations. I've never used them but I understand they're great for backing up single movies.

I use the routine in my previous post. But I'm generally encoding 1/2 D1 and fitting 3 movies per DVDR (use them on road trips, camping and such). (btw - 1/2 D1 is great for squeezing more onto a disk, if you're interested then look it up in the forums - also search for CVD)

Yes, if they are under 4.36GB then you can just burn them with Nero or any other burner software. Nero has a DVD_Video template that you choose and it will have a Video_TS and Audio_TS folders listed. Just drag all of the files that were made from DVDdecrypter when you ripped them to the Video_TS folder. Leave the Audio_TS folder blank. Then that is it.

The only time that you have to use DVDshrink, DVD2one, IC, CCE or any other transcoder / encoder is when the dvd is larger than 4.36GB. So that it can be shrunk down to fit on one disk.

It is not good to ask for what is the "best" way to do something as everyone has their own opinion as to what is best. If you are looking for the easiest way that does not take much time or knowledge to use and gives you good quality backups then I would suggest DVDshrink (which is freeware) or DVD2one. Use DVDshrink as it gives you more control over how things get compressed. IC (instant copy) is supposed to be good also, but read that is is buggy and takes some time to tweak things. DVD2one is has the fewest features, but is very simple to use.

There are lots of other ways to do it too but most involve alot more time and understanding of how a DVD works inorder to accoplish those methods.

hey guys , done as said, just want to clarify a few things. i dragged the contents of the files created by dvd decrypter ( 4 vob files and 1 ifo file) to video ts folder in nero. i followed guides for the settings and burned the dvd. when i go to play the dvd-r in my pc it opens to a video ts and audio folder., is this normal.

You need something like PowerDVD to play a DVD on your computer. I use PowerDVD but there are others.

I assume these 'hard drive copies' do work? Did you test them before trying to burn a DVD? If they work on hard drive, then they'll work on a DVD, and they'll work on a settop box is the directory structure is correct.

I think so. Why don't you pick up the disk, walk over to your DVD player, and see? :P

the files work great off the hard drive using powerdvd on my pc.

Then it's either a file structure problem or a disk problem.

Is 'VIDEO_TS' folder in the root of the DVD disk, and the movie files in that folder?

Is the disk 'closed'?

I use "Track at Once (TAO) Closed" and "UDF with Joliet File System" without any problems.

Compare the file structure of a working disk with yours. Are they the same?

i found what i did wrong . When i originally ripped the dvds with dvd decrypter they were done in IFO , not File format. A member in another forum suggested to run the files thru DVD2ONE to create missing ifo's and bup's . I've done this to a few,and then burnt with nero and so far they work well on my PC, i am going to try them on my friends standalone today, ill let know how i go. thanks guys.
