  1. OK, I initially want to convert some old VHS tapes to DVD and edit them down to something watchable. My desktop is a SIS730S MB, AMD 1.2 Mhz processor, 512 ram, 2 40 gig HDs, a Sony DRU-510 DVD RW, and an ARTEC CDRW. I first ordered Pinnacle Studio AV 8. Then I found this site, did some reading and quickly cancelled that order. Then I ordered a Canopus ADVC-100. Did that yesterday...an internet order. I probably ought to slow down because I thought it was a card with a analog interface. But after I ordered and did some more reading it looks like it hooks up to a firewire port which my MB doesn't have. Now its a pretty crabby MB but its been serving me well. What's my best route now? Should I upgrade the MB? Can I get a firewire card? Another possibility is I've got a pretty capable laptop with a firewire port. I suppose I could use that to do the capture and somehow trasfer the result to the desktop for editing. Seems not worth the extra step. HELP. HELP.

Get a firewire card. They run about $30US. I think you will like the ADVC-100. It doesn't come with any software, but it works well. One of it's advantages is that you will be able to use it with your laptop or your main PC. There's plenty of advice for it's use here. Do a forum search.

  3. Thanks, I was hoping that was the choice that made sense.
