  1. I would like to be able to back up a few movies that have the Widescreen and Full Screen versions on the same side of the disk - but would like to preserve the menus and DVD extras - or - on other DVDs, I would like to cut out some of the extras to make room for the actual movie at a higher quality while keeping the menus intact. DTOX seems to give me all or only the movie.

Is this possible on OSX to be selective in backing up?

    Thanks,

yes, but it requires Virtual PC and an app called IFOEDIT.

you may beable to get away with just tossing the .vob files but keeping the .ifo/.bup files and the VTS_xx_0.vob's (all of which are TINY)

then it should play because they are there, but the extras are not.
im not sure if you can do it BEFORE, but i know you can do it after

I only do it before if the result of tossing them makes the dvd under 4.4 gigs (which it usually does in the case of wide and standard on the same side of a dvd)

    make since?

if you have VPC let me know ill tell you the steps, otherwise, its easier to just say in OSX and do what i said above.

In DVDBackup only select the .VOB files that contain the version of the film you want (be sure to get the main .IFO file too). DTOX will then only show the title set you have.

.. but this guy wants to keep menus. (who watches DVDs for menus, anyway?)

You have to either delete unwanted .vobs (some players may choke if actual files aren't there though) or replace the unwanted vobs with dummy vobs (empty text files with a .VOB extension, named corresponding to the actual vob files you're replacing -- this way only your menus will choke when trying to access content it thinks still exists).

If you want to make it easy on yourself and can live without the menus, use the newest DVD2OneX with the join feature, extract the parts of the DVD you want to backup (including multiple audio tracks and/or subtitles) and live life free of menus.

right but i think he actually wants the menu to work!

just adding the menu with join wont enable the menu selections to work!
at least i have never gotten it to work that way

additionaly, its impossible to find the title for the menu to add anyway, unelss im going about this the wrong way when i tried join feature in dvd2one

Or just do a quick GET VTS SECTORS with IFOEDIT, then it wont choke up when the .vob is missing

No, no, no ... I didn't mean to imply the join feature will enable the menu to keep working ... In fact, since properly authored menus aren't authored as a separate track, they wouldn't appear in the DVD2OneX's available selections in Join mode.

I suggested Join mode because for me, DVDs are more about the movie, and a lot less about menus. In fact, when I author my own DVDs from TV captures, I always have the menu as the final play item, after the main content (as well as accesible from the Menu button on the remote).

Replacing vob files with dummy vob files won't make the menu choke until you try to select an option that is no longer available on the DVD. The menus will work as normal if you select material that is still present on the disc.

I authored Darkness Falls, which has both Widescreen and Fullscreen versions. To make it fit I simply delted the vob files for the fullscreen version. The DVD plays perfectly. If I try to select the fullscreen version it just doesn't do anything.

    I totally agree with you....

However, im one who likes to have the ability to have menu for scene selection purpose only.

I typically delete all the crap and just leave the movie and the menu and the menu usually comes up immediatly for me.

but! i do like the idea of having the menu be the last played item.
how do you swing it so the menu comes up last rather than 1st?

is it just a simple name it 1+ the last movie .vob??

I do have VPC - although it's awfully slow on my 667mhz - but I'm wiling to try - thanks

Wow, I wasn't aware of anti-menu-ism out there. TO clarify - yes, I would like to keep everything together except delete either (1) a fullscreen version or (2) some other extras I may not be interested in on any particular DVD.

Thanks Galactica - I'm very interested in how this is done!

    ok
I need a little info first
can you paste contents of your VIDEO_TS folder here please,
try to make sure it shows up here exactly as it would apprear in the video_ts folder when in LIST view.

also, tell me which ones are the widesreen and which are fullscreen .vobs

    additionally, which are extras material

    basically do this... (for example)

    VIDEO_TS.IFO
    VIDEO_TS.BUP
VIDEO_TS.VOB (tell me what it is, example, warning labels, rating label)

    VTS_01_0.BUP
    VTS_01_0.IFO
VTS_01_0.VOB (menu, scene selctions screen etc)

    VTS_01_1.VOB
    VTS_01_2.VOB
VTS_01_3.VOB These are my widescreen files
    VTS_01_4.VOB

    VTS_02_0.IFO
    VTS_02_0.VOB (black screen)
    VTS_02_1.VOB (extras)

and so on for your video of interest.

  11. Sure, but it'll have to wait until tonight when I can get to that computer. I'll then edit (replace) this message with the requested information.

    Thanks!

Essentially here is what you do

    VIDEO_TS.IFO
    VIDEO_TS.BUP
VIDEO_TS.VOB (tell me what it is, example, warning labels, rating label)

    VTS_01_0.BUP
    VTS_01_0.IFO
VTS_01_0.VOB (menu, scene selctions screen etc)

    VTS_01_1.VOB
    VTS_01_2.VOB
VTS_01_3.VOB These are my widescreen files
    VTS_01_4.VOB

    VTS_02_0.IFO
    VTS_02_0.BUP
    VTS_02_0.VOB (black screen)
    VTS_02_1.VOB
    VTS_02_2.VOB
VTS_02_3.VOB These are my full screen files
    VTS_02_4.VOB

    VTS_03_0.IFO
    VTS_03_0.BUP
    VTS_03_0.VOB (black screen)
    VTS_03_1.VOB (extra)
    VTS_03_2.VOB (another extra...)

ok, so what you do is toss all the .vob's you dont want **BUT** keep the .ifo/.bup AND the VTS_xx_0.vob where xx can be any number. the 0.vob is typically just a small black screen for only a second or so of play time.

move all the others. so to remove the full screen, you would pull out the bolded items.

Likewise for any of the further extras, keep only the .ifo/.bup and the 1st VTS_xx_0.VOB

so now you have this new VIDEO_TS folder that has less items in it than you did before.

Open VIRTUAL PC, share the folder that your VIDEO_TS folder is in so that when you open IFOEDIT you can choose the files from there.

    step 1.
open VIDEO_TS by clicking OPEN and choose VIDEO_TS. next click REGION FREE to ensure that all the region settings have been removed. I have noticed that DVDBACKUP does not remove ALL settings reguarding region and PAL/NTSC settings so this ensures that is done. Click yes to all the app says and it will say something like ENJOY YOUR REGION FREE DVD.

step 2. open the VTS_01_0.ifo file
click GET VTS SECTORS. this is adjusting this .ifo and all the others to know that your dvd is missing the parts you took out and adjusting accordingly. click yes to everything it says. NOTE: since you are in OSX and running VPC it will ask you to capitalize .ds_store file. I always click no, but assume either answer would be ok. When this is done, your new VIDEO_TS folder will have newly rewritten .ifo files that are set to go with the loss of .vob's as normal.

NOTE: dvd player app will not play this dvd off the HD. burning the disk allows your dvd player to read it with no problems (suggest using dvdrw 1st time just to make sure). VLC has not problems playing the HD files nor the dvd when inserted.

this is essentially how i use this app, and its great for making movie only copies with menu's that work. Just remove ALL of the .vob files you dont want instead of just teh fullscreen and youve accomplished movie only with working menu.

ill get this typed up nicely soon and have it posted on my website, but this should explain it pretty well

oh, one thing i forgot. you dont need to SAVE the files once the GET VTS SECTORS is done they were already rewritten as the app was working. so when you quit IFOEDIT it will say quit without saving? just say yes.

Thanks for that tutorial! I'm about to give it a shot but it may have to wait until early next week - I'll let you know how it goes!

    Thank you very much!
