I think I remember seeing a DVD program that can backup a DVD on the fly. It can decrypt the movie/compress/burn all at the same time?
Is there such a program??

The only one I know of is DVD X Copy. They have their share of unhappy customers, but when a one-click solution works it is a beautiful thing.

cmsurfer,
If you Have DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter. AutoShrinkIso will make it a one click solution.

If you think you can do it with no Harddrive space, don't bother. Typically you can need as much as 18 GB of space to backup a DVD. Typically you need less, more like 9-10 GB. For some DVD5's you can use as little as 4 GB.
There is not insert DVD in Drive 1 and DVDR in Drive, Click and go software. Would be a killer app(especially if you could drop the dross and flotsam and transcode as you write)..............To Be, Or, Not To Be, That, Is The Gazorgan Plan -
NO. None of the programs mentioned do everything all at once, without ripping/HD/etc. all while burning the final copy.

Hey, no big deal. I just remember reading about some kind of DVD burning software the other week and something caught my eye on it when I was reading the description on it. Maybe I read it wrong, oh well.
I have backed up many many DVD's since I started playing around with video editing. I have and have tried almost every piece of software out there to burn/rip/edit blah blah DVD's. Something just caught my eye about what I read and I forget where it was. That's why I asked.
And lordsmurf, thanks for the blunt answer

Turns out we were all wrong. There is a DIRECT BURN solution from Intervideo called DVD Copy Gold. I can vouch for the quality and feature set, too... it's excellent. They are selling it at www.intervideo.com for 29.99 USD, which is 20 bucks off the normal price. I just bought it since I was using the trial.

It'll do EVERYTHING on the fly? I don't believe it.

To do everything on the fly, your system would require at a minimum, 1 DVD-ROM drive and 1 DVD burner, and still probably a gig or two of hard disk space for scratch.
I wonder what kind of quality you get from this package?Just what is this reality thing anyway? -
If you read the page carefully, you'll see this glaring statement:
Note: InterVideo DVD Copy Gold cannot be used to copy CSS-encrypted discs.
I can already use Nero to copy on-the-fly from non-CSS sources.
And I have SERIOUS doubts about claims of performing on-the-fly transcoding at 4x. I'm betting it requires 1x speed or something not disclosed on the Web site.
Hey, I wish it existed too, but the technology isn't there to support it.Want my help? Ask here! (not via PM!)

The best you can do is to use Anydvd running with Clonedvd. using this method I can do an average size dvd9 to dvd5 in about 34mins, basically anydvd removes the protect etc so clone will copy the disc. it still however has to compress it first, but only one (plus one in the background) program required to do the full process.

Yeah but DVDShrink and Burnatonce can do a DVD-9 to DVDR in <1 hour and it's free.
DVDDecrypter can rip and burn a DVD-5 to DVDR in <30min.
I realize these methods aren't "on-the-fly" but it's pretty damn close. -
Well, I didn't read fully. Oh well... Like I said I read a quick description on it and it caught my eye. I'll try it out with a non CSS disc tonight and see how it goes.
And my setup is one DVD-ROM drive, 1 CD-ROM drive, 1 DVD burner, and about 100 gigs free space...
I'm very happy using DVD Decryptor, and Instant Copy to make all of my copies...-- CMSurfer -- -
I use AnyDVD so it wasn't an issue. However, I do know it direct burns... and from my estimates it does it on a 2x-rated Ritek at 2x.
It also allows you to pick and choose your titleset, audio and subtitles, compress DivX or DVD to a single disc, and the performance and speed combo are top of the class for me.
I'm not much of a fan of Intervideo's products, but this one is outstanding.
