Quake 3, going past 800x600 = very dark screen

I just got my Radeon ultra 64mb video card in the mail. But when I set the resolution higer than 800x600 or the audio to 'high' quality, the screen refreshes and turns a very black color, almost not playable. I tried reinstalling w/ max and min installation methods and still no luck. I'm using win2k. pleeease help.
