  1. cab anyone tell whether they know of any problems with popping a dvd writer into the ide enclosures that availible which connect by usb.
    im looking at getting a dvd writer but have no space in my case?
    any help appreciated!

    I don't think you will have any problem, the only thing is that you need to have either a USB 2.0 or firewire enclosure.

    I don't know if an 8x DVD writer will work well. Just check what it's available in the maket for an external DVD writer. You just buy the drive and the enclosure separately and it should work fine.

    I'm using my LG 4040B within an external enclosure. I use both Firewire and USB2. The enclosure is a Bytecc Me-320:

    I've got the 4040B jumpers on "CS" for auto. I burn at 4x with Princo DVD-R.

  5. sabesh, do you know if it is possible to update the 4040B's firmware while it is in the external box? The LG instructions really emphasize that, for the purpose of firmware update, the drive must be installed as master on second IDE channer. Just wondering if these instruction are overkill on part of LG, or whether they are absolutely necessary. If absolutely necessary, it would be a real hassle to have to take the drive out of the external box and open up the computer case every time you want to update the firmware. They seem to release a new fimware version every month or so for these drives.
