  1. What codecs would i need to play high quality movies that have been ripped? I can play divx with WMP but thats it. A lot of movies now seem to be SVCD, Xvid, and such. The only way i'm able to play them is with VideoLAN, and that is fine but every movie i have tried, it will consitantly crash on some random parts of the movie so i'm looking to play them with WMP.

Even if you did get the right codec, the next WMP patch from Microsoft could still wreak havoc with it. Suggest you try PowerDVD or WinDVD. I only use WMP to make sure mys video I want to share with my comrades-in-arms will play.
    Hello.

I use WMP9 with the latest updates. The codecs I have installed are:

    DivX 5.1
Xvid build 3/31/2003 (Last stable build)
AC3 Codec (Dolby 5.1 Suround Sound)
LSX MPEG Player (not a player, an MPEG2 codec for WMP to play SVCD)

    and

Intervideo MP3/DVD Xpack (to rip cds to MP3 and play DVD)

And a few others that come with WMP9. I hear too many responses to problems like "just use PowerDVD or WinDVD". I say why install another program when WMP9 can play them?

because WMP9 is MICROSOFTS best arrogantware and it takes over all your file types unnecessarily
It also trys to play your VIDEOS in a tiny window..(not exhibiting their native size-not allowing aspect ratio changes)..
Don't try the playlist feature either and If you let it do digital rights management too then you are really asking for it!
It you think real player was bad for installing little tray poisoner apllications, WM9 is worse..
It checks the MICROSOFT sites (all of em) fro DIGITAL CONTENT to tease you with and tries to profile you..
It also will attempt to send the TITLE of every DVD you play if you have
to MICROSOFT's dvd database (this is not to stop piracy but to provide you with infor on you titles should you want in the manner of the CDDB
(cd database) to have the INERNET and MICROSOFT tell you what you are playing....sometimes with hurous results that are less corrrect that the data on the actual disc you are playing back

SO Id like to add the SONIC cinePlayer as a valid alternative
to Win DVD and Power DVD

Use your windows folder options to change your file associations.

It also trys to play your VIDEOS in a tiny window
In the WM view menu make sure your check "Fit Player To Video On Start" and in your full mode options check "Autohide Menu Bar"

If you let it do digital rights management too then you are really asking for it!
    Simply turn it off.

It checks the MICROSOFT sites (all of em) fro DIGITAL CONTENT to tease you with and tries to profile you..
Uncheck "Start Player In Media Guide" in your player options.

to MICROSOFT's dvd database (this is not to stop piracy but to provide you with infor on you titles should you want in the manner of the CDDB

Do you know this for a fact or are you just paranoid? Did you know that when you buy something at the store that "they know" what title you bought?

In conclusion: I have yet to hear any valid reason to use something else.

    All that stuff is good..
Why didn't you post it the first time...You've just outlined my settings!

But since you didn't tell the poster of this thread any of that..I thought I'd step in and tell others whats wrong with window product..all those settings make the MEDIA PLAYER better..
but it still will change your settings for you -THANK YOU MICROSOFT..when you upgrade
or go on a microsoft website sometimes....
Do you know this for a fact or are you just paranoid? Did you know that when you buy something at the store that "they know" what title you bought?
yes a C. Kilroy of the Windows Media fame has stated that Microsoft is collecting the title and incidental data from every DVD played with the WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER..it doesn't identify
or target you..its trying to help you..But me, i usually KNOW what DVD I've put in the drive and without BROADBAND connection, If I'm online when I use the Media Player in this way, it slows everything down to a agonizing crawl.
Also, I have clips that need the digital right management so, unfortunately, I can't turn that off..I wish there was a seperate way to turn off the "INFO ABOUT DVD" feature..

and what was that other comment? ..If I pay cash..how would the store know anything?

Actually, the choice of a media player is so subjective that the debate can go on endlessly. So let's just say it is the choice of the user.

I wish there was a seperate way to turn off the "INFO ABOUT DVD" feature..
In your "Privacy" settings tab under Tools | Options there is an checkbox called: "Retrieve media information for CDs and DVDs from the internet"

If you uncheck that, maybe that might stop the behavior you are experiencing... (?)

You can also disable sending any information to MS by unchecking: "Send unique player ID to content providers" and unchecking "I want to help make Microsoft software and services even better by sending Player usage data to Microsoft."

I have both of these unchecked.

While you're there you might also want to uncheck "Acquire licenses automatically to protect content". Also uncheck "Copy protect music" in the Copy Music tab.
