I regulary use the so called Ken Burns effect in my slide shows using Vegas Video 4 and they do very well with those effects, however, the other night on PBS I saw a documentary use an advanced technique of the Ken Burns effect, it was almost as if the slide shows were 3D!
There seemed to be cut outs of certain parts of the pictures that were then brought forward or put into the background and as the camera zoomed and panned, the perspective on each section was different. How on earth did they do this?

Probably with Adobe After Effects.
I used AE to create a really cool intro video for my sons football team. I created a brick wall with his helmet painted on it. As the camera zoomed in on the wall, just before collision, I had a door cut out of tghe wall and slide open to reveal a 3D room. I made a tile floor and 3 walls made out of video footage of the team. I also had other video wall pop in and out of the floor.Got my retirement plans all set. Looks like I only have to work another 5 years after I die........ -
There's a bit of difference in effects between the latest version of AE. The "Standard" version has all the basics but not nearly as many built-in effects as the "Professional" version. AFAIK those are the only differences between the two, but considering effects packages go for upwards of $1000 the one you mentioned may not even be a branded Adobe effect.

I don't know what you mean by Adobe branded effect. My effect was 100% created by me using Photoshop for the images and AE v5.5 production version for the effects.
If you're talking about the effect that tygrus2000 mentioned, then the point I was making, is that it should be easy to create in AE.
There is no reason to by effeects packages if you have Photoshop and AE or equivelents.Got my retirement plans all set. Looks like I only have to work another 5 years after I die........
