I just purchased a Sony D-8 (#350) so I can convert my Hi-8 tapes, and I am wondering about the Sony EZ Editor software/firewire package. Here iswhat is included:
PINNACLE STUDIO Version 7SE editing software for Windows®
PINNACLE STUDIO Version 7SE Guide to Movie Making
PINNACLE STUDIO Version 7SE 1394 i.LINK® / Firewire® capture board

Thus, my questions:
1. I have a Sony Vaio computer that already has the firewire card, so do I REALLY need to get a package that includes a card?

2. For simple capture and editing, is VDub enough?

Thanks for the help.
No, if your present fire wire card works, you don't need another.

Again, no. To capture DV through fire wire, you need at leastDVIO. It is freeware and very easy to use.
Thanks. What about the software that comes with the machine:
Sony Original Software DVgateTM
Media Bar®
MovieShakerTM
SonicStage for VAIO®
PictureGearTM
Smart Capture
VisualFlowTM

Looks like I should be able to capture with that, as well as the Nero VisionExpress.

I would suggest trying all the free software you have, along with all the trial ware you can get your hands on. Find out what works for you. One of the biggest debates topics you can get going in this forum is "which software is the best?"
Hello.
