I have an Apex DRX-9000 (no comments, please!!) and am recording movies/ tv/vhs tapes onto dvd+rw. (The quality is quite good) Eventhough the instructions suck, i have figured out how to use it. My main problem is: How to edit out the commercials. I have tried to use the TMPGEN DVD Author, but it won't open my files to edit. My DVD has 2 files VIDEO_RM AND VIDEO_TS. Anybody?

    Is VIDEO_TS a file or a folder ?

My mistake. VIDEO_TS is a folder and a file. I tried to copy the files which are named; VTS_01_1 on up, along with the IFO files into my C:/Temp.

So you are telling us that TMPGenc DVD Author will not load the VTS_01_1.VOB files ? I thought it would

I just tried it and it did. The only problem was the file dialog box
did not include VOB so I had to set all files.

Isn't there a pause button on the Apex?......KIDDING!!!!!!
How about taking out the commercials BEFORE it gets to a .vob file with DVDShrink....wouldn't that work?
I'm somewhat new to all of this myself but so far DVDShrink has been fantastic in picking out bits and pieces of commercially produced DVD's...haven't tried my +R's from my Philips 985 with it yet.

DVDshrink sure is tedious for commercials.

Look at past posts and see what people do with DVD recorder discs and Womble MPEG-VCR.

Womble will edit MPEG2 files. You dont have MPEG2 files
If you extract MPEG2 from the VOBs , you can now edit
but you have destroyed the DVD structure and will have
    to re-author.
The basic problem is that a DVD was made with commercials in it.

Can you make that thing just record a MPEG file ?

Don't think so. So far All I've done was record movies (scifi) off satellite (I have Directv) and junk tv shows from cable. The scifi movie was my 1st attemt in editing.

  13. Momcat-

TMPGEnc DVD Author should open that folder (VIDEO_TS) and then list the files you can import. That's how I use it to edit DVD's I record using my Panasonic DMR-E20 home unit. It works great. The more I use it, the easier it gets!

Thanks everyone for recommending that software!

    Peace-
    Jeff

  14. Im trying to remove commercials from a SVCD file using the method found on lordsmurfs guide (http://lordsmurf.com/), but the audio/video keep going out of sync. Ive tried a number of times without any luck. What could I possibly be doing wrong?

I did find a program that work almost like womble mpeg2vcr, but it uses windowsmediaplayer as the video player in the program. The program is called nanopeg Editor. It is very slow when moving through the frames in the video, but it produces a synced file in the end.

If anyone has any suggestions, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

Sounds like you should have bought a HDD DVD standalone recorder like the Panasonic E80, which is the best bang for the buck right now at ~$500US. Because it does have the HDD, it's easy to cut the commercials from a show and burn the result to DVD-R or DVD-RAM. I've heard that the Apex machines have problems galore and several companies now no longer carry them. Any way you can take the Apex back and get the Panasonic? That's my best advice...
