  1. hello,

i'm going to be getting a sony dw-u10a burner (anyone got any oppions on this burniger) for my birthday next month. i'm pretty good at making svcd's and have been doing so for 2 years. i'm just now finally getting around to getting a dvd burner.

my dvd player is a jvc-523g. my question is playing my dvd-r's on this machine. The machine will only play dvd-r's which is why i was looking into the sony burner which supports all the media types (incase i need a new dvd player in the future). the player does not support svcd normally but i can do the heading trick and make it play xsvcds fine. my question is what format does the dvd's i would burn be in?

i was reading previous post and it mentioned how dvd's being burned don't support vcd's. so i'm going to guess i have to convert all my svcd's back to dvd format. i'm just wondering if that change is going to cause another loss in picture quality of its another format that i will need to worry about my player being capable of playing.

sorry for sounding stupid with these questions.

  2. If your dvd player supports it you could make DVD-SVCD's... (I found this post really confusing so I hope I gave you a good enough answear).

Either +R or -R, those are the only writeable DVD formats. Both are compatible on most recent DVD players. As for resolution, there are several valid DVD resolutions, look in the "What is DVDR" section for more details.

VCD video is valid for DVD, that is 350X240 mpeg1 (NTSC). The audio may have to be re-sampled up to 48 KHz, although many DVD players accept it at the VCD standard 44.1 KHz.

You can burn your SVCD's to DVD without converting (SVCD2DVD will do it) and many DVD players will accept it. No converson = no quality loss. If you convert it to DVD resolution it will be more compatible but there will be some quality loss. Look for SVCD to DVD guides.

    Hope that helps! 8)
