  1. Hi

I am trying to put 3 episodes of the young ones onto a single dvd but
uleads dvd workshop keeps saying i don't have enough space on the disc.

I converted all the episodes to avi and imported them into dvd workshop
and created a simple menu (background image and 3 links to each
episode) but despite all avi's total about 3.6 gig, dvd workshop keeps
reporting them as being too big for the disc. I even tried lowering the
audio bitrate to 160 and lowered quality to about 5900 but still it falls
short (reported as being about 4.4 gig). Why can't i fit them on? they
only total about 1:35mins. Why is dvd workshop making the final burn
about 4.4 when in reality they only total 3.6 gig. I realise that the creation
process may need to add some size to the files because of format changes
(vob etc) but why almost a gig larger?

I did consider trying to just copy the vobs on which would avoid converting
to avi but wouldn't that mean the original chapters would be still intact and
actually forwarding to the next episode wouldn't be possible without going
through all the previous chapters first. If i could do this method and just
be able to forward to each episode (no chapters intact) would be a bonus
but i get a sneaky feeling this wouldn't be possible because chapters being
    preset in the vobs.

Personally i prefer the menu method but with all the time i have wasted trying
with a menu and the oversizing problem i am willing to try anything.

    Any help/guidance appreciated in advance!

  2. I converted all the episodes to avi
There was no need to convert to AVI, what was the source before you converted? You'd be better off using the source files, and converting those to MPEG 2.

The size of an AVI is completely irrelevent when it comes to fitting on a DVD. You could have a 700mb avi file that is 2 hours long, and still not fit on a DVD (once converted to MPEG2).

The only determining factor of the size of the DVD Video is the video bitrate and audio format.

If it's claiming to be 4.4gb, you're very close, you only need to cut the bitrate by a tiny bit and it should work (4.38gb is the target).

  3. The source files are vobs but dvd workshop doesn't accept these.
The only real reason why i like to use dvd workshop is because i
actually like there menu creation process and menu quality is
    to my liking.

Would actually using the vobs be more likely to fit or am i going
to have the same problem again?

    Thanks

Converting to avi is not required. Demultiplex into there m2v and ac3 primary streams with TMPEG or VOBEDIT and any authoring package should import them directly unless it doesn't support ac3 audio.

Also, Tmpgenc will accept vob files and there is a trial I think. I love that for authoring. Then you could author it to the size it is, and when done if it is too large you could shrink with DVD Shrink to a size that would fit. If the TMPGENc says thefiles will be too large, just click on ignore, make the VIDEO_TS folder, and shrink.
