I saw some avi files out ther on the internet and associated with each avi file was anotehr file with the suffix *.smi. I was just wondering if anyone knows what this file is and what do you do with it.

    Thanks in advance,

    Googled it:

    .smi -
    Created by Disk Copy.
A self-mounting image, similar to .img, but does not require the use of Disk Copy.
Download the .smi file and open it. A disk image will appear on your desktop.

I presume smi means "self mounting image". Just a guess.

  3. I think you are are wrong as far as I know >smi is a subtitle file known as sami, a window format file., not an image file. It is used to create subtitle in a video. You can view it using winsubmux

As I stated, this is what came up in Google. I didn't say I knew what the file was. It was purely a guess if it was correct or not.

By memory - and it's shaky this morning - no coffee yet - smi is an extention for Real media files. Check www.real.com There are free programs for developing multi-media presentations that combine video, text, etc. for display in RealPlayer.

The .smi file is like a set of instructions of what to display and when. It's mostly used for online "productions", but I used to use it to display and manipulate pics and scrolling "letters" to family before I got into all this video stuff. :c)

Thanks for the info guys. I suppose i could download the file and check it out myself. If it's for streaming video does any one know how I would encode to that format. I use adobe premier 6.5 to encode DV to real media format.

    Thanks in advance,

Try the Real site link in my post above. They have lots of info and had freeware tools to do it. Although I do recall the free stuff was hidden deep within the site - not easy to find.

    Good luck. :c)
