First off can you use a cd-rw to create a vcd. If you can does the cd-rw have to be formated or do you just use it like a cd-r

If the CD-RW is completely blank, you use just like a CD-R. If it is not, you have to erase it first.

  3. noobies must only use cdrw for vcd, as it saves on recriminations later.

By erase do you mean just delete files in explorer or is there other software that does a cleaner job?

Programs like nero and vcdeasy erase the contents of the cd for you...and yes, you can use cd-rw to make vcd's. I agree w/ rabiddog, use rw's for your first few vcd's because if you screw up(which I did many times when I started), you dont waste an entire cd.

    For CD-RW:

DON'T format it! If you have already, completely erase the formatting with a DAO/TAO disc burning software, such as Nero, EZCD, CDRWIN, DiscJuggler, VCDEasy, Prassi, Hotburn, etc.

Deleting files only gets rid of the files, not the formatting.

Remember: formatting sets up the disc for burning "data" with packet writing. (S)VCD, miniDVD, Audio CD, and std. Data CD-ROMs are all correctly done by Disc-At-Once (aka DAO) or, for data, sometimes Track-At-Once (aka TAO) software. These kinds of discs will be always screwed up if you attempt to do them via packet writing, or onto a pre-written disc.

You have to set it to automatically erase without telling you as I recall.

I wouldnt recommend erasing automatically...it gives you an option to "blank cd". Just use that.
