Toast 5 seems to have problems with 105 drives in FW enclosures, limiting you to 1x speed. I believe Toast 6 resolves this problem. Until then, I think you have to either install the drive internally, keep burning at 1x, or find some other burning software for your needs. I could use some confirmation here, but I'm pretty sure Toast 6 will burn at 4x for you.

I had the same problem. The DVR-105 only accepts specific brand media to burn at higher speeds. After I´ve patched the fiirmware to rpc-1 without rip-speed limitations and burning "no-name" media at higher speed everything was just fine. Now it´s even possible to burn at 4x.
For information on patched firmware go here

P.S.: I just added an archive containing the updater and the patched 1.33 firmware here
Please notice that I´m not responsible for any damage on your drive by applying the patched firmware. Use at your own risk !! In my case it worekd fine but I can´t assure it for any other case -
I recently ordered (not delivered yet) a Pioneer 106 drive which I will put inside my G4. I know I can tell the firmware version using System Profiler, but where can I go to find out if there are any firmware updates for it. Chances are Pioneer doesn't make the Mac versions as accessible as the PC updates, but possibly a similar strategy as used on the 105 might work. Does anyone have any experience with this model?

ps -And of course the day after I placed my order, the price dropped $8 and Pioneer announced the 107 (8X writer). I'm sure there's a Murphy's law governing hardware purchases. -
OOH!!!! That must have slipped below my radar. Woohooooo!!! Yeah! 8x baybeeeeeee! So, when can I buy one of these beauties?

I believe I read that they might be out by Christmas. Check this thread:

Hmmm, go for the 8x or wait till dual layers or blue ray . . . decisions, decisions. I think my 4x burner will suit me fine until something better than just 1.5-2x the speed. More space would be great for all those DVD-9 discs I have to deal with.
