Hello,
I have just recently noticed a problem with my discs that I think is being caused by the Caselogic storage cases. I was just wondering if anyone else has noticed this and wanted everyone to check, just in case.
I have had my Panasonic HS2 since the beginning of the year and from day one, I have been using Caselogic 128 DVD storage books. The ones that I've bought come in a purple cardboard slip cover and sell for $25 - $29 at Best Buy and Media Play.
The media I use are Samsung Beall DVD-Rs with the mirror finish on the top. I do not put labels on the discs. I simply put them in the binder and place a small sticker on the outside of the pocket on the binder page.
I am now on my third Caselogic book.
I just recently took a disc out of the first caselogic book that I bought back in January. I had burned this disc back in January and it has been in the Caselogic book since that day. When the light hit the disc the right way, I noticed what looked like dust or fingerprints on the top of the disc. I used a special CD cleaning cloth to try to clean the top of the disc, but the dots would not come off.
I then noticed that there was a 1" spot on the disc that had no marks or dots on it at all. I then started checking all the other discs in that book and found that all the discs had some degree of this "corrosion" on them. I also noticed that the spot on the discs where there was no marks was where the cut out in the page pocket is. On some of this discs you can actually see the "U" shaped cutout of the clear plastic part of the page pocket.
So from this information, I am assuming that the clear plastic part of those pockets is doing something to the top of my discs. Especially when you realize that the part of the disc that is not being touched by the clear plastic does not have the marks.
I also checked my other two books and I see no marks on any disc in the newest book (the one that the discs have only been in for a month or two) but, there are dots and marks on every disc in the second book (actually, the dots are even worse in the second book than in the first)
So, here are my questions.
1. Is anyone else using these Caselogic books?
2. Are you also using Samsung Beall DVD-Rs?
3. Do you see any small dots or marks on your oldest DVDs?
4. Could there be some sort of acid problem with these pages?
5. Will these discs be saved if I get them out of these books, or if there is some sort of chemical reaction that has started are the discs doomed?
I have emailed Caselogic, but have received no response.
I would greatly appreciate any insight into this that anyone might have.
Thanks,
Lenny

Wow !! You are scaring me
Pinnacle Studio 8 and DV home video editing (ver.9 already home) -
I have 4 such Caselogic books (48 and 72 disks each). I am also using Microsoft's MSDN sleeve envelopes that look quite a lot similar to the caselogic sleeve design.
It happened that I was looking for a disk in the morning and browse through all the storage cases to find it - I didn't; its probably lost.
BUT, I did notice something like what you said. A couple of Verbatim CDs with white matte top label - didn't know why so then but now realize they are printable - were almost yellow over the U shaped area not covered by the platic envelope cover. Two of them were inside the Caselogic book.
But don't despair. A couple more of such disks had exactly the same problem. They were stored inside Microsoft MSDN sleeves inside Microsoft Plastic cases.
I suspect there is something wrong with these disks manufacturing process. Perhaps they should have been printed and they were not!
All my other disks, stored in Caselogic books between 2 years and a few months, appear to be in perfect shape.
I would suggest you change the media brand to start with. The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know.
