Am looking for new DVD player to replace my Toshiba SD3109 (ok player 4 years ago). Works fine, but can't play much homemade stuff cap'd from 8mm camcorder. I have read very few posts and reviews that have gotten the right combo of media/format/dvd burner/software and settings to make one play on this player. I would really like new player to have multi disc changer and play many media and formats. I am considering:
1) Pioneer DVC505 - $135 - no progressive scan
2) Panasonic CP72S - $185AR -yes progressive scan
Don't own HDTV, but can forsee it in a couple years. Will I need a set top progressive scan decoder anyways? Should I go with an even cheaper APEX and consider it a throw away if I ever get the HDTV? Any insight or opinions are welcomed.

The Cyberhome DVD500 has progressive scan, plays DVD+RW/+R, MP3, JPG, Audio DVD, VCD, SVCD has a DTS and 5.1 surround decoder, component out, optical + coaxial digital out, ALL region cheat and
you can upgrade the BIOS via CD-R !!!!
costs 49.99 $ (20$ mail in rebate) at Best Buy. It does not get any cheaper !!! -
I think it will as long as you don't author with NERO. The only thing about the Cyberhome range is that the picture quality isn't wonderful ... but they do play just about every damn disc out there.

I have a progressive scan and never used the progressive mode.
for future use. -
I got the Pioneer DVC505, it plays everything I throw at it, except MP3-DVD discs.....
it's capable of doing a DVD with a bitrate up to 11.0 Mbps (sound included, found out by accident...)
Plays
- DVD+/-
- SVCD
- XVCD
- VCD
- MP3-CD
- Audio-CD
? DVD-Audio, SACD (probably not, since not even the newest players really support it, but i've never tried...)
Audio out
- digital optical
- Composite
Video out
- S-Video
- Component
- Composite
5-disc tray
Nice 256 Color GUI interface, with tranparency when displayed over video
Audio-CD only mode.
MPEG Audio
Ya so it has no progressive scan mode, but unless you have a 27"+ HDTV, then it's pointless since you won't see any real quality improvments with a 480i or lower tv.... -
I have the Elite version of this DVD player..the Pioneer DV36 and I love it, plus it has progressive scan, but I have never seen it able to play mp3 cds. How do you author them to work in this player?

Hi peoples,
Yeah, I thought about gett a progressiveScan (PS) for a while now, but then
I found out that you need a PS capable TV set to play it. I don't know if it
won't play at all, or just won't yield the PS side of it. Maybe, it senses weather
or not your TV is PS ready, and if is, will play it, else if not, will use the usual
standard way of playing on regular tv ..I know. Anyways...
@ Oli72,
I'm wondering if this is the same PS player being offered at K-Mart, but for
$69 dollars.. z'what they are selling one for today.
But, in any case, let me ask the question..
* On these PS players, are they two-faced, and if your TV set is not PS, then
...does it switch down to regular mode ?? , or
* Is is PS all the way, but if your TV set isn't PS ready, you won't notice any
...difference, but will still play fine ??
Yes, I'd like to tinker around w/ one, pending the above
Thanks for any advice,
-vhelp -
I don't have a PS tv. PS is about $20 more on a dvd player so what would be the point of spending $500-$1000 more on a tv to use it?
