Hello,![]()
I would like to know your opinion about capturing in virtualdub or freevcr with the Xvid codec.
My capture card is a Leadtek Winfast 2000 XP deluxe, and I stil don't get a noise free optimal picture quality from the TV channels.
But that aside, I now put the antenna cable into the VCR, and then from the VCR with the SCART and Composite cable to the capturecard.
The signal is slightly better. Also now atleast I don't have to setup the tunersettings from the card eachtime I use Virtualdub.
I have tried different codecs and settings. But lately I was trying some recordings, and noticed that with Xvid (with CBR at 4000) I get better video quality and less noise than with Picvideomjpg at 18 or 19.
What is your opinion about that ?
Also what is better: to use the noise filter in Virtualdun during capture, or after capture, porcessing or frameserving with Chroma noise reduction to TMPEG?
Greetings,
Marco

How come you dont use the software that came with the Leadtek 2000 XP to capture ? I have always used thier bundled software and it works great for me.
I personally use the Huffyuv codec for captures that I will later be editing and putting to disc. Otherwise I just capture straight to mpeg2 using the default Optimal setting. At mpeg2 - Optimal, I cannot notice the difference between the tv broadcast and the capture.
I encode to Xvid after I have the Huffyuv stream using Virtualdub if I need to. I believe the reason you get a better appearing quality when capturing to Xvid is cause the Xvid codec uses some kinda of internal noise reduction. Where picvideo and Huffyuv dont. The way I do it takes a little more time, but allows me to keep control of the quality. If you are not editing these captures though capturing to Xvid is good if you will also not be further transcoding these to another format.
As far as NR filters...I tried everyone out there for Vdub and ended up liking the the TMPGenc NR filters the best. but this may be cause my source material were cartoons.
Also, are you using the WDM drivers tha came with the card ? or some other ones ?
Anyway, goodluck, if you have any questions regarding the Leadtek software let me know....I personally like it. -
I use Huffyuv for short caps and mjpeg for longer (who wants to edit a 60 GB video anyway?). And yes, they 'look' noiser than XviD/DivX does.
Ponder that for a moment. Your XviD capture isn't showing you what is on your TV. Why? Because it's impossible. XviD/DivX don't do interlaced video. So I guess it depends on your final output......To Be, Or, Not To Be, That, Is The Gazorgan Plan -
Well I have tried the software that came with the card, but I personally don't like it.
I suppose when you have to edit the capture, the best is to use huffyuv.
With all the different codecs and different program settings you get a million options. But that is ok , it keeps you off the street.
greetings,
Marco
