I know even the subject line might cause religious wars. TMPGEnc has always been the holy grail of VCD file conversion software. I've used it for a couple of years now too but am just fed up with all the bugs.

I've got a bunch of little music video MPGs that are in various odd pallates of frame rate, streaming audio, NTSC/PAL, etc. I'm trying to load up a TMPGEnc batch file so it can convert them all to more sane formats. Unfortunately if I pick up one that causes TMPGEnc to crash, I have to click through scores of little "runtime error boxes". Afterwards if I can get TMPGEnc to even restart I have to reset the stream type (NTSC(film)) and output directories. It just feels like the source code to this thing is a house of cards.

TMPGEnc and I have had one of those barely functional relationships over the last few years but now I think its time I started looking for a newer, stronger, more robust and attractive replacement so I can kick TMPGEnc out!

    Any ideas?

  2. Top quality for encodeing to mpeg1 VCD format. For DVD I stick with the regular retail programs like Ulead MediaStudio or others with broad capabilities.

You get what you pay for.

As far as converting assorted music videos.....come on! Your serious? Your batch encoding 20 fps 400x300 PAL videos in RM and MOV and wondering why you have crashes in batch encoding? You have to juggle the enviromental settings based on video type, or it will crash.

I did pay for TMPG, and although not the fastest, it has worked for me. CCE never seems to work (that is none of the trials let you actually use the ******* thing, no opening/saving ECL files). I guess that leaves 1 or 2 others out there, but same thing, they don't work with other apps.

I gave up doing MPEG2 by hand (that is each step manually) a long time ago, and I'm not going back to command lines now.......

  7. I have tried many others but the fact of the matter is that TMPGEnc is the best. When your computer is right this program kicks ass. When it doesn't work for you repair your computer. ............. harrymj3
