RDRAM vs DDR

It's not really an issue of RAM type...

If you want to use RDRAM, it basically means that you are using the P4 chipsets/mobos that use RDRAM rather than the P4 chipsets/mobos that use DDR-RAM.

Since the fastest/newest P4 systems are designed for DDR-RAM (i.e., Canterwood chipset), I believe that the choice for the fastest PC system is clear.

Your computer details say you have RDRAM. You're stuck, as I don't think there is an RDRAM board that has optional slots for DDR.

Your only option would be to change MoBo, and I don't know if that is an option for you. If you don't know what RAM you have, you probably didn't build the machine yourself, so replacing the board would entail another trip to the builder.

Your RD is "supposed" to be the fastest possible, right now. Just stick with it till time to upgrade your system.
Hang in, it should work quite well.

gmatov, it also says he has a 2GHz P4, when he's talking about a 3GHz HT. I think he means he is wanting to build a brand new computer for vid editing.

@falconx, you can only capture and cut/join MPEG2, it is an end format (no editing afterwards). If you are wanting an MPEG2 stream to work with, it has to be ALL I-frames, and CBR at high bitrate. (This is basically the same idea as MJPEG).

If you can hang on, the supposedly new Intel processors are coming out. People say it is the P5, others say it is simply a replacement for the Celeron because they want the P4 to have a longer life. If it is the P5, you're P4 3GHz will have had the price pushed down, if it is just a Celeron replacement, they will have made a faster P4 by then and you're 3GHz will also be down in price.

To add my viewpoint, I think RDRAM is the best, but DDR-RAM is much more inexpensive and the newest chipsets are having that incorporated.

You can confirm this at http://www.tomshardware.com or http://www.anandtech.com (or others) but with the latest chipsets for both AMD and INTEL you can take advantage of Dual Channel ram.

Basically this is using a matched pair DDR SDRAM chips to give double the memory bandwith. I believe this makes the SDRAM even faster then RDRAM. Check with the computer shop to make sure your new computer takes advantage of this feature (as well as HT - very nice with video encoders).

The idea is I want to build a new system and because I use TMPGEnc and it takes all the computer resources so it is difficult to do other jobs so I thought that the new Intel (HT) processor will help since it gonna act as duel processor .

Get a new mobo with the new Intel 875 chipset. You will get a fast 200 FSB and Dual channed DDR400. This stuff is fast. On the other hand you will get HT at any CPU speed.

My machine uses this chipset and I got HT with a 2.8 P4 CPU.
