im going to be geting the pioneer 106 on new egg.com this week. but new egg has different models of it. can someone tell me the difference between them? they have the DVR-106BK for 149, DVR-106D for 159, DVR-A06U for 165, and DVR-A06USPK4 - RETAIL for 185. what comes with the retail one? im going to be buying an external enclosure also to work with my laptop, if i get the bare drive, would i need any extra cables that the retail one would give me? i dont need the software that comes with the retail one, but i do need the drivers and stuff, so would the bare drives come with that or what?

The 106D is an OEM bare drive with white bezel. The 106BK is a bare drive with a black bezel (not sure why this costs less, usually black costs a little more). The A06 is a retail-boxed drive with a white bezel (I don't know what the software bundle is offhand). Unless I'm mistaken they should all be identical internally. I didn't order mine from Newegg, but my bare drive didn't come with any software or cables, just a small instruction sheet. You should not need any special drivers for these drives as they are standard ATAPI devices. You will need some kind of burning program like Nero or RecordNow, however.

Your external chassis will most likely come with the right cables.

  4. I have been happy with newegg everytime! Even when one system board did not work and I had to RMA it I was happy! Had it about 3-6 months never took out of the box, then I installed it and it was dead. No problem with the RMA, was fast, and I got back a better newer version of the same board! And it could even have been my fault the board was dead??

As for oem drives, look at the pics and read the listings. Sometimes you get only the drive, sometimes you get other stuff too! I saw an oem that came with software once. Looked like a retail package without the box, it had every thing.

With drives you rarely need anything, unless you want the software in the retail pack. Cables are cheap if you need one, unless you have to pay shipping on it!
Using an external case you should not need the cable, and if you don't want the software, then probably a waist of money to get the retail boxed.
Unless you want a pretty box

Unless I get one on sale or with rebates, I seldom buy retail drives! I keep extra sets of round cables at the house, then just buy oem drives!

  5. I just got the 106D OEM from newegg and I am so happy with it. I got a one manufactured in Japan. This drive doesn't make any noises when it is burning. I have burned 2 DVD successfully already and I am very satisifed. I used the DVD made by TDK, (TDKG02000000 ).

  6. I personally ONLY buy OEM. I don't need the chaep/crippleware software or the pretty box. The warrenty is still good too. Truthfully you can go 100% freeware with: DVD Decrypter, DVD Shrink, IMGTools and TMPGEnc (MPEG1).

one more question, for the external enclosure, whats the difference between the usb2.0 ali chipset for 35, and the oxford chipset 1394? i have both firewire and usb 2.0, so that doesnt matter. id rather get the cheaper one though.

The Oxford 911 is a proven high performance chipset for Firewire (1394) enclosures. I haven't heard anything about the ALI chipset, though it seems to have good reviews on Newegg's site so it probably isn't total crap (click the "Read the reviews" button under the product description).
