Sony dvd players are probably the stricted players there in regards to which media they can read. You will have better luck with cdrw than cdr but in general your just going to have to experiment to find a brand that works consistently. If you havent already, check the dvd player list on this site to see what kind of experiences other people have had with your brand of dvd player.

Original vcds and those distributed in Asia are almost always on pressed media. These are created on silver pressers which are the exact same hardware used to create commercial audio cds. These are compatible on all dvd players. Unfortunately the hardware is at least several hundred thousand dollars and is only meant to be used to produce disks in mass quantities. Your going to have to stick with cdr/w for now.

The disks are called cd silvers or just silvers for short. When you buy your vcds ask them whether they are pressed or burnt. If its burnt then it means its a cdr or cdrw. Pressed is what you want.

Look at the bottom of the media. If it has a blueish or greenish tint to it or if you can see through it slightly its definitely a cdr. But don't let them try to fool you. There are silver cdr media which look exactly like real silvers.
