    help i need a firmware update for this player as it wont play dvd+r's.

    yep ,thats right,the 857 doesnt play dvd+rs.
    only an earlier model with different firmware did,but there was a problem with the zoom and the icon for it,so they updated the firmware,and removed the +R compatibility,so you wont be seeing an update for it any more,as schneider said there wasnt going to be one.
    by the way,the player is now discontinued,and been replaced in asda,by the thomson,philips,pacific 1002W and pacific1001 dvd players.

    yeah, the wierd thing is though when i had a ricoh mp5125 i could set the book type to dvd-rom and they would play. now i have a pioneer a06, because everyone recomended it, and i cant set the book type arrrgh!!!
