Hi there I am trying to rip some of my dvds to xvid! I have managed to get the vob files into m2v and wav files using tmpeg mpeg editor. But I am unsure of which settings I should use to create the xvid files with vdub. I am wondering which works best?
I am a total newbie to this sorry!
thanks
the original file is from dvd recorder:
MPEG-2 Video(MP@ML), 704x480, 29.97 fps, NTSC 4:3, Interlace(TopFirst), 9558 kbits/sec
Linear PCM, 48000 Hz, 2 ch, 1536 kbits/sec

There are a ton of guides for DVD->XVID/DIVX/AVI.
What I would do is extract the main movie to a single VOB (with DVDD in IFO mode) and load that into Virtualdub-Mpeg. Make sure that both audio and video are in Full Processing Mode then just save it using xvid for video compression and Lame for audio compression.
I would just use the vob file and save the step of re-encoding to m2v & wav. It doesn't matter though, you should still be able to load into VDub-Mpeg set source to wav file and encode to xvid/mp3. As far as settings go, it will depend on how you intend to playback the files and how many discs you want to use to store the files (CD or DVD).
In addition, you will need to adjust the settings so that the video looks good to you when played back. I don't like to go below 700 kbps for bitrate (using 2-pass encoding). You should encode small segments on a re-writable disc and play it back to judge. If you are trying to squeeze footage on a CD-R or even a DVD-R you could use 2-pass VBR. It takes longer, but the quality will be better.Melde Melda Vessė

Generally speaking, most Xvids aren't that great of quality in the first place and if so, I would suggest an easier way. Try FairUse Wizard. Or for a little better quality and more control, AutoGK.
If you don't like the results of either, then spend a little more time understanding the Xvid codec. VD is just feeding it. The codec settings are where the quality is made. -

And only you know what looks good/is acceptable for you!Melde Melda Vessė
