  1. I have been watching movies on my PC...wanted to convert them to DVD but takes too long. SO, I tried to make VCD's...followed the Dvix to VCD guide give in here...but I end up with a few problems.

By using these apps; TMPGEnc VirtualDub and VCDEasy 1.1.1, I tried converting and burning to make VCD's. What I get is about 20 or 30 minutes of watchable video, and then it just freezes on me or resets. This happened with a couple of movies I tried. It always starts fine then screws up. Only once did it work...but even then there were bits and pieces where it looked as though it wanted to freeze up.

I tried Nero but when I pop it into the DVD player I just get a "This was made with NEro" start up screen and then nothing. I can play the files fine on my PC though.

If anyone knows what I have to do, or what programs I have to use that are better (In a simple way) PLease help me out...I live in Japan and this is one of the only things I can do for fun without going crazy trying to figure out what shit means in Japanese.

    THANKS IN ADVANCE!!

I take it you're converting dowloaded AVIs. In that case, you're in for a rough ride. A vast majority of AVIs that can be found on P2P networks contains more or less errors, making then unsuitable for further conversion.
These errors mostly doesn't affect playing, but wreaks every attempt to encode them to some other format (like mpg).
Some problems can be fixed by running the offending AVI thru VirtualDub MP3 Freeze, and scan for and remove bad frames. Then save out a copy of the cleaned AVI and use this for the rest of the process.
Stay away from Nero. The tools you've used are (among, some may argue) the best for this process, so stick to them.
If you think this sounds like a lot of trouble, just wait 'til you start with frame rate conversion, audio sync problems... If at all possible, do your conversions from a perfect source material. Right now, this equals the original DVD.

  3. Sounds shitty...would it matter if I were converting to SVCD or DVD or anything else. VCD just seemed a much faster way to do things that's why I did it. I have a very nice portable VCD player which I can bring to work...I would love to be able to do that.

Anyway, if there any other suggestions out there it would be nice. But it seems as though I am screwed

Nope, since the problem is in the source file, you will encounter the same problems regardless of target format.
As I said, a good clean source is the only way to get at a good end result.
