  1. I recently installed a new PVR250 card into my system. Installation went very smooth. I made sure I had all the new software updates as well.

I made my first MPEG2 capture on the DVD Long Play setting for a 30min. TV Show. Where I run into problems is when I try to edit the commercials out. I tried using their nanoedit program, but the edit points were all screwed up. So, I decided to use TMPEG (which I used to use for editing my vcd/svcd quality captures on my avertv card just fine) but had the same problems.

Then, I tried MPEG2cut and had good success with 2 of the three edits. Unfortunately, when I try to play the 2nd edit I don't get any video playback only audio in Windows Media Player. The other two edits play fine.

I've even re-encoded the entire file in TMPEG and then tried to edit and had the same problems.

I've also tried Sagerecorder, but had sync problems.

According to Hauppage I should be able to capture, edit, and burn with their included software, but I haven't accomplished anything but capture successfully. I'm tempted to take the card back and use my old avertv card, but I really wanted the mpeg2 encoding so I thought I'd try here first.

    Any help is greatly appreciated,

    Brad

  2. Mpeg was never intended as an editable format. If you really want to edit your captures, cap in an avi codec, edit, then convert to mpeg.

TMPG can only cut files it encoded itself. Sounds stupid I know, but MPEG2 isn't an editable format. There are lot's of programs to edit MPEG2, and you can see how well it really works.....sync issues everywhere!!!

Capture to AVI, in MJPEG or Huffyuv codec. Edit out commercials in VDUB ( 2 minutes tops ) Then encode as desired(frameserve if encoding to MPEG2 via TMPG).

I don't know about you Gazorgan, i regularly edit mpeg2 files in TMPG with no problems with the cuts or synching audio.

  5. I use womble mpeg VCR for cutting all my real-time captures, and it works without sync problems and goes to a specified header (means it can be used for the VCD header trick).

DON'T use mpeg2cut. It does creates mpeg2 system streams when you are really wanting mpeg2 program streams. (for dvd etc.)

  6. Allright everyone the good news is in!! Womble worked where all others had failed. I loaded the clips into womble, made my edits, saved the files, and then loaded them into Ulead DVD Factory and burned my disc with no problems whatsoever!

Womble is the hands down winner for MPEG2 editing.

I appreciate everyone's support and recommendations in this crazy editing adventure. I would have never figured it out without you guys.

    Thanks again,

    Brad

Based on MANY user comments on this forum as well as other forum groups the WOMBLE MULTIMEDIA program MPEG2VCR is the ONLY program that can seem to properly EDIT a MPEG-2 file without the need to re-encode ... plus it doesn't screw up audio synch etc.

Unfortunately it is not free nor "cheap" ... last time I checked the price was around $125 or $130 US Dollars ALTHOUGH there was a time (not that long ago) that the program was about DOUBLE that price!

However, it is an ESSENTIAL program if you need to edit MPEG-2 files.

Is that MPEG2VCR or MPG-VCR? Womble only lists the latter, version 3.14 as being the last version. I tried this last night with an MMC 7.5 SVCD test cap of 1 minue and it unsynced the audio and video when I cut the opening 10 seconds. Will have to play with it awhile to see what I did wrong. Some editing programs like M2Edit Pro only allow you to cut from the end forward to the beginning without losing the sync. I tried to cut from the beginning, so this MAY be a factor. I also saved as a SVCD program stream (no encode) so this might also be a factor. I tried to save as a mpeg-2 program stream and got no audio (only a high pitched squeel). Have to work with it some more I think (and yes, I did DL the manual)...

The PVR250 is mpeg only, you can't capture to an avi. I use SageRecorder with my pvr250 with no problems at all, Hauppaugs software is total crap. I also use womble mpeg2VCR for editing and it works MUCH better than any of the others I have tried. TMPGEnc mpeg tools work, but I noticed on some, not all, I get audio sync problems. It's no where nears as good as womble mpeg2VCR.

  11. The old version 1.x of Mpeg2Cut has a lot of compatibility problems.

Try version 2 - Mpg2Cut2 - which resolves a number of issues from Version 1, and adds a number of new features.

Download the latest version of Mpg2Cut2 at
    http://www.geocities.com/rocketjet4/

If you are having problems with Version 1,
then give Version 2 a try.

For cutting VOBs, I recommend the following::
    - "menu - Output - Preamble - MAXIMUM"
    - Also use "PVAStrumento" from Offerynto fix timecodes..
