  1. What is the ripping speed of Pioneer DVD-R 106? Is it locked to 2X like the DVD-R 105?

as far as i know all dvd writers are locked at 2x for ripping dvd movies, ripping of dvd roms is not fixed at 2x and should be able to be ripped at upto the max for the drive .. eg: 16x for the 106

the reason the drives are locked at 2x is becuase an agreement was made with film studio's to limit ripping speeds of movies to help protect against piracy

dvd-rom drives (those that can read but not write) do not have this restriction

  5. I remember reading in one of these forums where somebody got speeds up to 6x on a 106. Can't find it though...Save yourself the trouble and time by just buying a Lite-on 163 or 166 -- you'll get great rip speeds for around $30. I've ripped hundreds of disks and never had a problem with my 166...

I agree with Jimmykicker, buy the Lite-On drive. I've gotten speeds up to 8x for video DVD's so far...and it's inexpensive too.

Besides, I'd only use the 106 to burn, why shorten the life of it by reading discs? Of course, I'm sure we'll all upgrade to 8x writing drives in 6 months... :P

    Thats just not true.

My Ricoh hits the 8x easily with standard firmware

  8. I have the A06 (retail version) - using DVDDecrypter, I've seen it rip at 12.2X sometimes, but not continuously, at the end when the program is done it'll give an avg and a max value, usually it'll average around 5-6X. Also, it seems different movies will rip slower or faster too.

I have not updated the firmware or anything - straight out of the box.
