  1. I am trying to encode a Dolby 5.1 mix to a quality compression (signifigently reducing file size) that can be played back as a stereo mix as well can be decoded into 5.1 channels by a Dolby Decoder.

I want to play a mix as stereo as well have it play in surround if using a sound card equiped with dolby. Has anyone sucessfully done this?

    I have tried AC3tool (error), AC3Machine + Besweet (nothing).

  2. SurCode for Dolby Pro Logic II converts your 5.1 surround soundfiles
to the Dolby Pro Logic II format by matrix-encoding the Center, Surround,
and LFE tracks into the Left and Right tracks. The L and R tracks
then become Lt/Rt, which stands for Left total/Right total - meaning that
Lt/Rt tracks contain the matrix-encoded Center, Surround and LFE
tracks. These Lt/Rt tracks can be distributed and played in stereo, and
also decoded by a Dolby Surround/Pro Logic/Pro Logic II decoder and
    played back in surround.

But it costs $495 US. Any other things out there that is a cheaper way of doing it?

Well Bsweet will do standard Dolby Surround (but that's only 4 channels [Left Right Centre and Surround]) without any problems, and it should be fine on a PLII decoder

  4. use DVD2AVI to downmix and decode the ac3 to wav, then convert the wav to mp3 using the software of your choice

AC3 Decoder will convert your AC3 to downmixed 2 ch directly to mp3, costs $19.95 US www.mediatwins.com

  5. Besweet-processes the AC3 to Wave but there is an empty wave file...the properties are there but no wave file...press play and nothing.

DVD2AVI-wont load any of my ac3 files "support stereo PCM Only"

AC3 Decoder-keeps on giving me "error unsupported format or damaged file"

    Are you running other versions?

  6. Another option for AC3 is Headac3he. It has worked well for me and allow you downmix AC3 and select what channel outputs seperatly.
