  1. Hi,

I have TEAC 516E DVD-ROM I'm using to transfer DVDs to my hard disc. The drive was reading up to 12X starting from 3.6-3.8 and increasing.
Couple of days ago bang! no more than 2X. Otherwise the drive is working OK I can watch movies and transfer files only the speed dropped below 2X. No changes were made to my system whatsoever.
Anyone any ideas what could be wrong?

    Thank you!

Have you installed any new software ?
    Try and rollback the drivers.

  3. I'm installing and deinstalling all the time. What do you mean to rollback the drivers?
Is it possible that bugs entered my PC from Internet or something?
    What to look for ?

    Cheers!

Simple solution to your problem, Right click MY COMPUTER, click PROPERTIES, HARDWARE, DEVICE MANAGER, and Delete the IDE Controller that your DVD-ROM is on and then restart. After that rip a DVD to do a test and post results please.

In other words the OS has downshifted the drive from DMA to PIO mode. Rick should be in service support.

Either that or it has downshifted the drive to a lower DMA Mode such as 2 when it should be at 5.

I have had luck with uninstalling the IDE controller, it should work for you Gregg.

SlickRick - my two drives are set to ultra DMA 5 and 2. Whats the difference and how can I get the 2 up to a five? Thanks for any help you can give.

  8. Rick,
A compliment but I can be a smart ass at times. Actually if the drive was at UDMA2 it would still reach max transfer.

MS downshifts ATAPI devices from DMA to PIO. They do not do it gradually. If this was an ATA(Hard drive) device then you would see a gradual downshift.

UDMA5 is 100MB/s transfer and UDMA2 is 33MB/s transfer rate. You may not be able to set your DVD drive to UDMA5. In fact I know of no Atapi ODD device that can support UDMA5. UDMA2 is sufficient to support 16X DVD transfers. 16X needs a bandwidth of 22MB/s.

My Pioneer A06 did the same thing. For the first couple of days it would read at 12-15x. Now it reads at 2x. I deleted the IDE controller and restarted my system but nothing changed.

I thought that the A06 was supposed to only read at 2x with original firmware. Did you change the firmware.

I didn't change anything. Just straight out of the box.
On the box it says it can read:
    12x DVD-ROM single layer
    8x DVD-ROM dual layer
    6x DVD-R/DVD-RW
    6x DVD+R/DVD+RW

I did some testing and I figured out that it depends on the media. When I used a dvd-rom (dual layer) of Shanhai Knights it read at 2x. When I used a backup(Princo 4x) of the same movie it started reading at 2.7x and gained speed to 6.1x. It finished at 6.1-6.2x when it had decrypted all the data. I also tested Samsung BeAll 1x DVD-R. The read speed started at 2.6x and raised to 4.1x.
