  1. I have a few Dolby Digital/DTS/THX trailers that I've had on the pc for awhile. I don't have a hollywood card anymore so I dont have anything to decode them w/. SO I tried to throw them on a vcd. Oops. THat does not work. Any idea on how to get the vob files to burn and still keep the 5 channel and 6 channel tracks? I didnt see anything on the site pertaining specifically to retaining the digital tracks. Any ideas? Thanks so much
    -Kris

EDIT: I forgot to mention the raw files I have of the trailers are vob files. thanks!

You cant put them on VCD at all

You could put them on SVCD and re-encode them to mpeg5.1 which isnt as good as quality as DD5.1 or DTS and not many DVD players or Decoders Support it.

You could make a miniDVD, which is DVD files on a normal CD, but you only get about 10-15minutes per CD, ideal for your situation, but yet again, its only if your DVD player supports miniDVD's.

They're are the only options i know of.

  3. MiniDVD? I guess I'll look around for that, I got a brand new dvd player, hopefully it does... would I just throw the vob files straight on there?

    valetdude:

Check the players compatibility list <-- to see if your player can do miniDVD. If you wanna play it on the computer, I believe WinDVD and/or PowerDVD could do it. Of course, you wouldn't get the full effect of decoding on computer unless you already got a card that does 5.1 out.

I mainly meant to say that you can't just drag the vobs over to the disc and burn, unless you've got the full VIDEO_TS folder w/ all the files that are required for that disc title (depends on title, but see example in www.vcdhelp.com/dvd. If you don't have all the correct files, you're gonna have to demux the vob into video (MPEG2) and audio (wav/ac3/mp2/dts) and re-author in a DVD authoring proggy. If you do have all the correct files, use a burner prog that understands the requirements particular to DVD-Video, not just any 'ole UDF/ISO bridge disc burner. Nero can pretty much do it. Prassi also.

    Happy burning!

From the 'readme.txt' file in that site's downloadable 'Dolby VCD':
Dolby Surround - The THX example from labDV.com

This example is to demonstrate Dolby Surround capability of VCD and Super-VCD standard. A Dolby Digital AC3 5+1 sound track from a DVD THX trailer has been downmixed to a 2 signals Dolby Surroud with 4 channels.

By Jim and Steve (May 5, 2001) from http://www.labDV.com/en/examples/dolby_surround.htm
Seems to be saying they convert the Dolby Digital 6 channel down to a Dolby Surround 4 channel.

  7. Encodeing it into Dolby surround always help -if somebody can find a pro logic encoder of course. Dolby Pro Logic, sometimes called as Surround or LCRS is a simple analog stereo signal, where they matrixed the center and surround channels. This means that if you can play a stereo sound, you can play pro logic. You can listen pro logic in FM radios.. but its much worse than Dolby Digital (limited bandwith MONO surround channel, no real separation, no LFE, etc.)
