    is there any converter (freeware) that converts divx to mpeg2? dvd2svcd is free, but tmpgenc is not. any other alternatives? thanks.

    I don't think so. There are shareware, trialware and commercialware products available.

    If you don't want to pay, the best you can do is download Mainconcept and use it in demo mode. It will work fully but embed a Mainconcept logo on one of the corners of the video.

    If you want to buy an encoder, the best price is for CCE Basic edition (at about $60 or so). Tmpgenc is almost as much but much slower.
    The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know.

    bbmpeg is free.....but....you get what you pay for.

    TMPGEnc isn't that expensive, nor is the newest version of CCE. Both work with a lot of other programs/scripts/frontends (such as DVD2SVCD).
