I was planning on getting the Canopus ADVC-50 ... but I've got the latest release of WinXP [Home Edition] with the update included ... SP-1.

So ... does that mean I would be wasting my time and money on the ADVC-50 ... or the ... ADVC-1394. I don't want to have any problems with video/audio sync.

If so ... what capture card in the same money bracket ... $200 bucks ... will provide me with very very decent video captures and work without any problems using the recent WINXP Home Edition with SP-1 included.

I am using the ATI AIW 7500 right now. I use the AMD 2500+ /barton chip. I get good captures but ... I want more ... LOL.

If I had $200.00, I would get the Datavideo DAC-100. It would convert composite, S-video, etc. to DV. I am saving up for a Canopus ADVC-100, because even though it does the same function as the DAC-100, I need audio/video lock, because I usually do long captures (often 2+ hours). But if you do not do such long captures, the former should suit you just fine. Hope this helps.

Wouldn't you have the same problem ... getting the card to work correctly.

The Canopus forum is filled with everybody having problems getting the ADVC cards working correctly with WINXP SP-1 installed.

I will be video capturing ... once in awhile ... more than 2 hours.

Anybody else ... have any suggestions ???

I'm not sure if I'm following you correctly ... I have WinXP Home Edition also ..... but it is the new CD with SP-1 included.

Are you saying you have the older version ... WinXP Home Edition ... minus the SP-1 update ??

    Sorry to keep bothering you.

I thought more people would be interested in getting involved with this topic.

    Lacy,

Talk to,or checkout Lordsmurf's guides and you may find you don't need antything more than the 7500 you have. Also, go back in time and search out txpharoah's posts, same thing. They say the AIW does as well as any other card on the market, so why spend 200 more to try to improve?

You have a 2500 mhz CPU, so you should have no prob.

Maybe you are looking for something unreachable, the perfect capture.

And, if it's from VHS, impossible, you ain't gonna get better than the input, period.

this is the profile I used to capture using InterVideo WinDVR 3

    [EndGame]
    Format: MPEG-2 DVD

    Audio:
    Format: DVD LPCM
Sampling Rate: 48.0 kHz 16-bit Stereo
    Bit Rate: 224 KBits/sec

    Video:
    Size: 720x480
    Frame Rate: 29.97 frames/sec
    Bit Rate: 6000 KBits/sec

    Total:
    Bit Rate: 6467 KBits/sec
File split size : 6000 MBytes.

    --------------------------------------------------------------

    AMD XP 2500 + /barton is a 1800 MHZ CPU ... I do have it O/C to 1921 MHZ

Audio/sync was fine. VHS movie was StarTrek Voyager Endgame ... last episode of the series. I captured two sections 58 min each.

Color saturation/and tint was terrible ... compensation with WinDVR was needed.

Frame drops ... I can't tell ... I didn't use the ATI program to do the capture.

Okay ... nothing went wrong other than the VHS tape being a couple of years old.

But I still have a desire to obtain a decent capture card compatible with WinXP Home Edition with SP-1.

Any suggestions ??? ... gals and guys.

    Sincerely ... Lacywest .... aka Mach10

You have all of this working against you:

    - I consider WinDVR to be the #1 worst MPEG capture software. Don't use it.
    - Use the ATI MMC. It was made for the ATI card.
    - Old source, so you should consider a good VCR and TBC

  9. I would get Dazzle 2 go to www.dazzlegeek.com to see if it will work with your mother board you can get one here http://www.shopharmony.com/ dazzle 2 is great for Satellite dish and Laser disc and some time's good for VHS if the tape's is in good shape. For VHS have a high end VCR for noise reduction.

ATI ALL IN WONDER's are good picture little sharper on the Dazzle 2 but MPEG file's are more on key and can be read by TMPG alot better. And ATI AIW now has noise reduction now on the card and is very good for old vHS tape's that are in bad shape.

I like to have both card's in one does one thing better then the other.

go to www.pricewatch.com for ATI AIW
