I have backed up 6 movie dvds thus far using TDK DVD+R 4X media. Two of them exhibit dropout or pixelation in some parts of the disk. I looked thouroughly at both of the bad ones and noticed a discoloration on some parts of both disks. Blotches about 1/8 to 1/4 inch irregular shapes. These blotches are darker than the media itself. Media is purple. What causes this? Should I have posted in the newbie forum? javascript:emoticon('')

If you can see the spots with your eyes, then it's very likely that you got defective dye on the discs. Use the Nero CD Speed from the following link and do a transfer rate test on the defective discs:

If these discs cannot be read correctly, then you got defective discs. Return them to TDK or the vendor for replacement under warranty. -
I have had good luck with TDK media both DVD+R and DVD-R. I did however see the same thing you're seeing on a batch of 15 Verbatim 4x DVD+R but I was able to use the discs by just not recording over 4GB on them.

probabl a bad batch, TDK + media is RICOH and excellent, i've used over 100 without problems.
