  1. Everyone knows that DVD+R is pronounced with a 'PLUS', but there seem to be many different ways to say DVD-R

Because - came out first when there was no +
Surely marketing people would NEVER allow a
    negative sounding name.

Depends on its use. If in say windows calculator its a minus. But say in a webaddress its a dash. Same if I'm working on non math in MS word. Since it has several uses its name depends on its use. Since math has nothing to do with burning a DVD I call it "dash R"

If not for the plus format I'd just call it DVDR like I do CDs.

  12. I like to think of DVD-R like CD-R. Without saying the "-" .

    CD(Silent)R or CDR
    DVD(Silent)R or DVDR

Conversly. I will add the "+" when saying DVD+R.

    DVD(Plus)R
Don't give in to DVD2ONE, that leads to the dark side.

  13. If you buy retail, say minus. Some of the sales are idiots and have no idea what you are talking about if you say something else.

  14. If this.........

    +R is pronounced PLUS R.

    Then this......

-R has to be MINUS R.

The plus sign is a + and the minus sign is a -

    Where did DASH come from?

Marco33 is right, the - is silent, but when we see + we say plus. It's like when you read words with hyphens in them, you don't say "Hyphen". Go to Websters.com and put in DVDR. You will get results for DVDR, DVD-R and DVD+R

DVD-R: Digital Versatile Disk - Recordable
    and
DVD+R: Digital Video Disc - Recordable Plus

When it's just DVD-R you don't say anything besides "D V D R" but when you add the + sign, you have to specifically say "D V D plus R".

    I would say
    • DVDR ----------------- in general, applies to both recordable formats
    • DVDplusR ----------- applies to DVD+R
    • DVDminusR --------- applies to DVD-R
That "plus" or "minus'' won't make your beloved format any better or worse than it is.

When sy says "copy to a DVDR" it doesn't necessarily mean DVD-R
It means copy to a DVDRecordable

I read somewhere (Tom's Hardware, I think) that the Phillips deliberately chose the "+R" name. It was an attempted marketing coup because they knew then that many people would naturally call the rival "-R" format "minus R", thereby introducing the negative connotation.

Clever, but what a bunch of evil £$%&*£.

That means DVD-R/W made by nonprofit organizations and you'll go to heaven by choosing that format while DVD+R/W is supported by evil capitalists so I'll be damned.

I voted MINUS. That's what I've always called it.

I also call avi, just that - "avey" (short "a"), though I hear a lot of people only ever say "a.-v.-i."

I use to argue, in less busy days, with people who called .gif "jifs". :cD I always insisted it was a hard G. Too busy and interested in other things to argue any more.

Now, if someone can tell me how to actually pronounce "TMPGEnc" aloud when talking about it, I'll be happy. :c)

Bottom line: You can call them anything you want in private conversation, but if you go into a retail store to buy some from a clerk or order some over the phone, are you gonna just say, "Gimme 10 DVDR's.", and take your chances as to what you will get?
When it matters, you must clearly distinguish between the two, either by saying "dash" or "minus" for -R and "Plus" for +R.

    Could NOT be minus! (originally)

Does anyone say CD "minus" R or "minus RW?

The dash is silent, I do say dash nly becuae there is a '+' format.

Gotta hand it to Sony/Philips add folks for making it seem that '+" is some how a negitive or minus when the DASH is actually more compatable dispite their slanted misleading promotions.

You can tell the newbees from their lack of knowledge of DVd recordable history, they only came onboard AFTEr the very negitive format oxymoronicaly calle "+" came out.

    Par 4 the course.
