I did my first dvd backup using dvd2dvdr. I put in a dvd+RW and tried to get nero to burn it. I thought that since this is my first dvd I would burn at a slow 1X. I saw the speed in nero at 2.4x and there was no option to change this, the pull down menu box only showed 2.4x. I burned at 2.4x and everything was good. I would like to know in the future how I can slow my write speed down. I got nero 5.5.?.42.

I think Nero probably knows better than you what that particular disk will write at. That's not a putdown.

A lot of guys have been telling people to burn 48X CD-Rs at X to improve the burn. Nonsense. If it is rated at NX, burn it there. It will be a good burn.

And, DVDs are the same. If the program says it will burn at 2.4, or 4, let it.

Being a new burner doesn't mean you have to burn slowly to make a good burn. Play it. If it works, good burn. If it doesn't, not neccessarily the burn speed, more likely player won't accept the format.

2.4 is the minimum write speed for a DVD+R or DVD+RW, Nero is working fine. The media physically can't be written to any slower as far as I know.

  4. Can I just point out here that Nero doesn't know (or care) what the write speed is, it is the recorder that determines the write speed for a particular disc and returns the options available to the writing software.

Incidentally, in the DVD-R world where everyone seems to think hacked firmware is the answer, some of the botched ones don't allow you to change the speed from the maximum the recorder is capable of achieving.

The "author" of these bastardised firmwares thinks he was doing the right thing (or isn't competent enough to allow the choice to be made) but isn't doing everyone a favour - there are some discs out there which will not give a good burn at higher speeds regardless of recorders or the playback device, and in these cases a faster burn will result in a disc that falls into the coaster category. Unfortunately most people then slate the brand which is, in fairness, probably OK and it's their deviance from the legitimate that is helping cause the problem.
