I have a very widescreen video (2.375:1) which I want to display in the same way the television stations do these days when screening movies. I want to crop the edges but simultaneously add black borders top and bottom so that the picture would fill up a 16:9 TV, but when displayed on a conventional 4:3 set will have black borders top and bottom.

What settings do I need in TMPGEnc to get this effect without disrupting the aspect ratio of the image of course?

I'm trying different combinations of the "Destination aspect ratio" and the "Video arrange method" but everything I've tested thus far has distorted the aspect ratio.

Is what I want to do possible with TMPGEnc?

What form is the video in now? Is it an AVI capture or a DivX made from a DVD or a DVD source or what?

I assume the destination will be a DVD disc correct?

Also are you working with a PAL or NTSC source?

It is a downloaded XviD from a DVD source, 608x256 resolution.

    Nope. (X)SVCD

Also are you working with a PAL or NTSC source?
The original XviD was NTSC (23.976), however, I have changed this using AVIFrate to 25fps and I've done the WAV speed change to get the two PAL inputs I need for it to play on my DVD player.

    Well here is the problem:

You can make a (X)SVCD that is 16x9 but if you play that back on a stand alone DVD player the DVD player will NOT properly resize the (X)SVCD to show properly on a 4:3 TV

It will ONLY look normal on a true 16x9 display (or a 4:3 display that has a 16x9 "compression" mode).

Now if you make a (X)SVCD that is 16x9 and play it back on your computer then you are A-OK since just about all software media players will allow you to set the AR (aspect ratio) to either 4:3 or 16:9

However a stand alone DVD player can only resize 16:9 to 4:3 displays if you are using a DVD and even then it only works with full D1 resolutions (720x576 for PAL and 720x480 for NTSC). If you want a 16x9 DVD at half D1 then it doesn't work either.

So again the only time you would want to make anything 16x9 is:

1.) It is a DVD (in which case it will work with a 16x9 or a 4:3 TV)
2.) You are using a format other than DVD but you will be watching it on a 16x9 display

    Hope that makes sense
