I'm replacing my Pioneer 104 and would like your opinions. Which has most media compatibility and most trouble-free.

If I were in the market for one I would be looking at the Pioneer or the Sony (which you don't have listed). I would probrably choose the Pioneer.

The Optorite has been working good for me. Plus it has that slick HD-Burn feature (I just burned 1.3Gb to a CD-R last night) Werd!

I am still deciding between these two. Why the Pioneer over the Sony? The Pioneer seems to be favored by this board, but the Sony seems to get better performance reviews. (CNET, PCWorld). Wish there was something (other than price-not an issue), to nail it down. But then, in a couple of months we will have new models.

Also, there is limited reports here about the DRX model of the Sony (the external writer). I am interested in it. Have also looked at the external firewire box option, but kind of like the integrated aspect of the Sony.
Any comments of this unit?

If your getting an external drive, try the TDK Indi DVD USB2/FireWire. i've heard a few good things about it, also try checking this site http://www.techtv.com/screensavers/products/story/0,24330,3509477,00.html

If u want to burn cheap media and have no problem then buy Pioneer DVR-106 , i own one and it worx great!

Out of the three you site the Pioneer is the best if you had the Sony in the list I would of gone for that over the Pioneer. My friend has the Pioneer he is very happy with it as he can burn cheap media with it.

Haven't tried the HD-Burn yet (only got VERY cheap discs, work ok 4 svcd/vcd though)

Just found new firmware V2_217 on the firmware site (http://forum.firmware-flash.com/portal.php) anybody tried this yet? and what's it update? (not on official site)

I have the NEC 1300 and I have to say I am very pleased with it. IT burns both plus and minus and has rewritable capabilities all for £99!!

Thanks for all the responses. I went with the Pioneer. Could'nt be happier. Works well with all the current media I have on hand and works great with the 4x media I purchased.
