I recently bought a Sony DVP-NS715P standalone player. I chose this model because it is highly rated here by quite a few people. I figured this meant it was compatible with a wide variety of media.
I got my first batch of Ritek G04 DVD-R. I took an image created with ImgTool classic and burned it with DvdDecrypter. It doesn't work in my player. The same image burned on a DVD+RW plays fine.
I just took the Ritek disc to a store and tried it in a Sony DVP-NS725P and another Sony player. It worked fine in both players.
In the reviews for this player several people mention that Ritek discs worked for them. It seems odd to me that the disc doesn't work in my player and I keep thinking that there is something I'm missing here.
