  1. Hi

I am trying to convert my avi file to DVD Mpeg2 so I can author and burn my first DVD.

I have been following Bladricks guide "How to convert to DVD with TMPGEnc" but have ran into a few problems when trying to play back the burnt DVD, namely the video stopping for a few seconds then starting again for a minute then stopping again. Audio seems fine.

I am wondering if I have followied the guide correctly. Following are a few specs of what I have been using/done.

    - Video is avi 23,976 frames/second (FPS)
    - I am assuming that my TV can play both PAL and NTSC as I am in the UK. So there is no need for conversion to 25 FPS
    - I choose the option in TMPGENC for DVD PAL and CBR MP2 Audio
    - The guide says DO NOT choose the option for "Do not frame convserion", I am wondering if I should click this on. I have read in some posts that people click it on but I am unsure why?
    - I strip my audio in VDub and import it from the Wav.

Thats about all I can think of that might help you guys with a solution to the Jeryness.

    Many thanks.

That is why it is jerky, you are doing a poor mand NTSC (film) to PAL conversion.

    Select the DVD(NTSC) template.
set encode mode to 3:2 pulldown when playback and Framerate to 23.976fps (internally 29.976fps) and this should fix the playback, but this WILL be NTSC.

  3. Ok thanks.

So I take it that am right in saying that if the source is 24fps than I use the NTSC option in the TMPGENC wizard and if the source is 25fps I use the PAL option.

You also said that since the source was 24fps I would have to select the 3:2 pulldown menu option even though Baldricks guide does not say to use this option. Can anyone tell me why this is? I know that it means that it will do some sort of conversion in the DVD player to 29fps but why do I need this if my DVD player should run any type of NTSC??

  4. 23.97fps is not a valid framerate for DVD, in fact it is only valid for VCD, which is mpeg-1 and so does not support the 3:2 pulldown flags. A VCD player has to perform 3:2 pulldown itself on 23.97fps material. SVCD and DVD are mpeg-2 and require that 3:2 pulldown flags are present in the video stream.

  5. So is the guide flawed in the fact that it should say to select the pull down flag for conversion from 24fps avi to DVD in TPGENC?

In my tmpgenc wizard guide it says:

    Step1
    Select DVD -
NTSC if the video source is 29,97 or 23,976 frames/second (FPS)

    Step2
Note 3! If your video source is 23,976 fps(or 24 fps) then check so it says Film movie under Content of video.

Film movie = 23,976 with 3:2 pulldown and tmpgenc usually automatically selects it if your source is it.
