I've never tried anything with video or editting before, but I'm very famliar with PCs and other software.

I DVR'd a couple of my favorite Car Shows from U-verse, then recorded them to DVDs with my new DVD recorder I bought last month. I'd like to copy them to my HDD, then edit them to remove the commercials and reduce their size so I can burn several to a new DVD.
I have no clue where to start.
Any How-to's or links that someone can recommend to get me started? (I don't even know what questions to ask or search for?)
Any freeware suggestions? (I've never editted video before, only audio files)

Any help / suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Tmpgenc authoring works or mpeg video wizard dvd are probably the best for editing dvds. But they are not free.

If you want free software it gets much more complicated, you can use vob2mpg on the dvd and then import the mpg in windows movie maker or windows live movie maker, edit, export to high quality wmv or dv-avi and last convert to a dvd with free converters like dvd flick.

VideoReDo Plus and VideoReDo TV Suite are two good commercial programs for editing dvds and mpeg2 files. There are free trials available for them.

You could try AviDemux, which is free, and will certainly take dvd video as input. I've heard a lot of complaints about losing audio/video sync with AviDemux and mpeg2 files however. Don't know if those issues have been resolved or not, since I own a copy of VideoReDo and always use it for mpg2 editing.
