  1. I was so excieted to back up my dvd's so I went out and bought a Laptop and an ext. DVD burner. I ended up going with the a pioneer 4x burner and a compaq amd 2200xp, 256mb, 40gig, 15" laptop. Here is the problem. The laptop isnt 2.0 ubs but rather 1.1. Its taking me close to 3 to burn 4 gig worth of video. This can't be right. I was told it would only take 15 min. I can exchange the laptop to something that supports 2.0 ubs since I just bought it yesterday but will that make much of a difference? Anyone else have any trouble with this? THanks

depending on how much you're willing to spend, i would rather just get a laptop with a built in dvd burner. it's becoming more and more common now. the new sony laptop has a +/- drive in it. and most of the toshiba's have - drives in them. just a suggestion. if it's not a good one then i'd definately atleast suggest returning the current laptop and getting one with usb 2.0 if it's not going to cost you anything. it will definately help you out and save you from adding pcmcia cards to your laptop.

You probably have the Presario 2140US - that model is discontinued. It has been replaced by the 2140US, while newer, also does not have USB 2.0 support. Your only options are, as tompika pointed out, is to get a cardbus 2.0 adaptor, but I agree with thayne: just return it and get a current model that has the USB support that you need. Nothing worse than buying a new product and finding out it's already old/discontinued before you get it out of the box
Might want to do a little shopping online before buying. Some of the newer notebooks have DVD burners built in and can be had in the $1700 range (last time I looked, maybe less now).

  9. Ahahah, true. The PC that I have is the 2170CA. It sucks. I'm going to try to get the next one up that has a 2.0 otherwise I will just return the notebook and the ext burner and get one that comes with it. Why would the guy sell me the burner with the laptop that isn't even compatable? Im soooo mad!!!

Hope you didn't buy it at Best Buy (Pest Guy) - they might try to charge you a 15% "restocking fee" on a returned notebook or videocam. If they do, argue with them that you were misinformed as to the capabilities of the unit and it doesn't meet your needs. Almost for sure, you won't get socked with that charge if you exchange it for a better one (and pay the difference).

In my opinion no should buy external burners for laptop. I wasted 50% of media using in this fashion for burning cd-r long back. I used all Imation cd-r. I would suggest you get built in dvd-/+rw for piece of mind.

    GoodLuck
Don't waste your media. Burn it on re-writable media first.

I burn DVD's all the time with my 500MHz iBook with no problem (and it's slow!). My burner is a memorex DVD+R/W in a firewire case.

  14. I would recommend getting one with Firewire (a.k.a. 1394, iLink) support built in or get the card as tompika suggested (the laptop and burner). You will also need it for importing your camcorder DV if you ever do that now or in the future. My Sony DV camcorder boasts USB 2.0 support, but you later find that importing DV this way brings in much lower quality/resolution than using Firewire which has much higher bandwidth and offers better control of the camcorder from the computer.
